About BHP

At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential. With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities. Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success.

Come and be a part of this success.

About the Role

Prominent Hill is a copper–gold operation supporting Australia’s clean energy transition. As demand for copper in renewable energy infrastructure and electric vehicles continues to grow, your work will contribute directly to this important supply chain.

Reporting to the Senior Production Engineer, you’ll be part of the Technical Services team that keeps day-to-day production on track. This is a hands-on role that blends time underground with office-based work. You’ll help turn drill and blast designs into safe, practical work in the field, monitor performance, and make sure our data tells the real story of what’s happening underground.

You’ll work closely with production engineers, surveyors, mine operations and our drill and blast partners, building relationships across site and learning how a modern underground mine fits together. This role is a strong foundation for people looking to move into future Mining Engineering roles.

We work closely with Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Traditional Owners, and this partnership is part of how we operate every day.

In this role you will:

  • Support the design of drill, blast and production plans
  • Liaise with all stakeholders to ensure drill and blast designs meet site requirements
  • Spend regular time underground (typically several visits per on-site swing) to check that activities are achievable and being completed safely and efficiently
  • Carry out task observations and Critical Control Verifications (CCV) to help ensure critical risks are well controlled
  • Undertake QA/QC monitoring for production activities and help troubleshoot issues as they arise
  • Assist with stope reconciliations and abandonments on completion
  • Monitor and maintain quality data on underground performance so the team can make decisions based on accurate information
  • Undertake improvement projects that make our processes safer, simpler and more effective
  • Assist other Mining Engineering functions as required – this is a role where you’ll learn across the broader team

Location: Prominent Hill, South Australia

Roster: 8 days on; 6 days off

Contract: 12-month fixed term (with potential to transition, subject to business needs)

Direct flights are offered from Adelaide (just over an hour) and Port Augusta (around 30 minutes).

Our 8 days on, 6 days off roster gives you a steady rhythm: focused time on site followed by extended time off to reset and plan life outside work.

Once you have spent your first few months on site building relationships and competence there is scrope for hybrid work flexibility, helping you balance on-site time with working from your home base.

On site, you will have:

  • Your own private room with ensuite, TV, fridge and air conditioning (linens and towels provided)
  • All meals included – breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • State-of-the-art gym with personal training and group fitness classes
  • 25-metre outdoor swimming pool
  • Sports facilities, including tennis courts, cricket nets and a soccer pitch
  • Walking track, music room and quiet zone
  • Reliable Wi-Fi to stay connected with family

About You

You’re likely someone who enjoys being in the field as much as being behind a screen, comfortable in an underground environment (or keen to learn) and curious about how engineering, operations and data all connect.

You might be:

  • An underground operator or technician looking to step into Technical Services, or
  • Someone with experience in heavy industry or resources, ready to move into an underground mining environment and learn on the job.

Essential

  • Underground hard rock, practical experience (for example as an operator, service crew, charging or other production roles)
  • Ability to work in high-pressure, dynamic environments
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with operators, engineers and contractors
  • Commitment to safe production and willingness to speak up when something doesn’t look right
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, in office and underground environments
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (particularly Excel and Word)
  • Current driver’s licence
  • Able to obtain and maintain a National Police Check (NPC)

Preferred (but not essential)

  • Intent to pursue tertiary study in Mining Engineering or Mine Ventilation

If you don’t tick every box but you bring the right attitude, aptitude and an interest in building a career in underground mining, we’d still like to hear from you.
