Mining Engineer - Drill & Blast

Work Location: Iron Bridge. Fortescue’s Iron Bridge project is located on the traditional lands of the Nyamal people.

Roster: 8:6 – FIFO ex Perth or Port Hedland

Iron Bridge is Fortescue’s US$2.6 billion project, set to deliver 22mtpa of high grade 67% Fe magnetite concentrate product. Located 145km by road south of Port Hedland, the mine will deliver an innovative process design and industry-leading energy efficient operation.

We are currently seeking a highly motivated Drill and Blast Engineer to join the Iron Bridge Operations Planning team. Reporting to the Senior Mining Engineer – Drill & Blast, this role is responsible for daily and monthly reporting, optimal design and scheduling of safe and efficient drilling blasting activities and managing the supply of drilling and blasting consumables, products and services.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Complete effective drill and blast plans, tie in designs in a safe, accurate and timely manner
  • Compile post drill and blast reports, considering impacts to mining and processing
  • Provide technical support and assistance relating to medium term planning. i.e. D&B Parameters for Bench Operating Plans
  • Provide analysis and reports to mining operations including identification of improvement opportunities, performance reporting and conformance reporting
  • To be aware of and manage risks including blast damage
  • Contribute to the ongoing performance and improvement of the Operations Planning team
  • Work and contribute to a positive team culture

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Experience as a mining engineer, with a Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or similar, with a practical approach to engineering and design problems
  • Knowledge and experience including drill & blasting, planning, geotech, mine geology (block models), and knowledge in open pit mining preferably in deep pit (hard rock / base metal operations)
  • Computer proficiency (Excel, MS Office, Vulcan, blastlogic or similar) with strong analytical & data query skills with attention to detail; Experience with Tableau / Power BI/ PowerApps
  • Team orientation and demonstrated ability to take initiative; Experience using collaborative platforms like SharePoint, Trello and Confluence will be advantageous
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey technical detail to a variety of stakeholders
