Located approximately 140 kilometres southwest of Mackay in Queensland's Bowen Basin, Coppabella Mine is a key Peabody operation producing premium pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal for steelmaking customers around the world.

About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Senior Drill and Blast Engineer to join our Technical Services team at Coppabella Mine.

In this key leadership role, you will provide technical expertise across all aspects of drill and blast engineering, ensuring the delivery of safe, productive and cost effective outcomes that support mine performance. You will play a critical role in influencing short, medium and long-term planning decisions while leading continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational efficiency and blast outcomes.

Working closely with Mining Operations, Technical Services and external contractors, you will act as the senior subject matter expert for drill and blast activities while mentoring and developing a team of engineers to deliver best practice outcomes across the operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and optimisation of drill and blast programs to maximise productivity and operational performance
  • Provide technical leadership and governance across drill and blast activities and associated risk controls
  • Monitor blast outcomes and identify continuous improvement opportunities across cost, productivity and compliance measures
  • Lead investigations into drill and blast related events and implement effective corrective actions
  • Manage relationships with drilling and explosives contractors to ensure safe and efficient delivery outcomes
  • Review and approve technical standards, procedures and drill and blast plans
  • Mentor and coach Drill and Blast Engineers, building technical capability within the team
  • Provide strategic drill and blast advice that supports operational and long-term mine planning

This position is offered on a 9 day fortnight roster, working Monday to Friday one week and Monday to Thursday the following week, giving you every second Friday off.

About You

You are a safety-focused mining professional who combines strong technical expertise with a practical, collaborative approach. You enjoy solving complex challenges, working closely with operational teams and developing others to achieve high performance outcomes.

You are comfortable balancing production, safety and cost considerations, using data and experience to make sound decisions and drive continuous improvement. Above all, you lead by example and are passionate about building technical capability within your team. 

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Significant open cut mining experience with strong drill and blast engineering capability. Experience with drill and blast design, optimisation and industry software such as Vulcan and BlastLogic.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, including mentoring and developing technical teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence operational outcomes. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • A commitment to safety, continuous improvement and operational excellence
