Mining Technology and Decarbonisation Principal
Work Location: Perth. Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.
Roster: Monday to Friday
An exciting role helping develop and implement roadmaps for Fortescue’s decarbonisation by 2030. The primary focus of this position will be developing and executing the strategy on how our Integrated Operations centre will operate into the future and how we will leverage technology, people, and processes to transform the way we mine.
In this role you will collaborate with Control teams, Mining Production, Planning, Energy, and Original Equipment Manufacturers to develop and implement innovative strategies to meet our mine decarbonisation targets.
Key elements of our decarbonisation pathway include:
- Significant investment in renewable power generation that is supported by battery storage, to replace existing stationary diesel and gas-fired power generating facilities.
- Building transmission links between our mining operations in the Pilbara to integrate stationary energy facilities and provide a secure and reliable network to which additional renewable generation, storage facilities and electrolysers can be added.
- Developing and trialling electric battery and green hydrogen powered haul trucks to remove our reliance on diesel fuel.
- Developing and trialling hybrid locomotives that run on green ammonia and battery storage to replace diesel fuels.
- Replacing diesel engines in other heavy mining equipment (HME), such as excavators and diggers, with electric motors and trialling hydrogen fuel cells as their power source.
- Pursuing options to reduce emissions from other sources, which include dewatering, ammonia nitrate and port operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing strategy relating to how our future Mining operations and Mine control teams will execute plans within an decarbonised operating environment
- Strategy would encompass Technology, Process and People
- Liaise with technical support functions to understand risk and opportunities to the proposed solutions and to enable timely achievement of project milestones
- Stakeholder engagement with Planning, Energy, Mining, Control and Decarbonisation teams
- Operational readiness plans for proposed solutions
Education and Experience:
- Exposure to mining production essential
- Experience in mine planning processes (particularly short-term horizons)
- Exposure and knowledge in mine control fleet management systems.
- Passion for technology and continuous improvement
- Relevant Bachelor degree in Engineering (Mining or similar) – desirable but not essential
