About the Roles
We currently have an exciting opportunity for safety professionals to join the new SA Copper Asset HSE team as a Principal Safety or Safety Specialist. Reporting to the Safety Superintendent, these roles provide coaching, technical expertise and advice on various aspects of safety and risk management to leaders across site.
In the Safety Specialist role, you will:
- Analyse safety data and information sources to identify emerging safety trends and recommend safety improvement initiatives.
- Proactively reach out to site personnel to coach individuals in site safety systems
- Actively attend various safety routines across site
- Conduct training sessions across various safety systems.
- Establish and lead an investigation quality working group to maintain capability of investigation facilitators.
- Monitor a Safety email inbox and respond to support operational needs.
- Lead a safety field leadership improvement program and promote hazard awareness and identification.
- Support the sites Health and Safety Representative Process.
In the Safety Principal role, you will:
- Works in collaboration with risk business partners and site leadership to use the Risk Framework to effectively monitor risks and controls.
- Analyse safety data and information sources to identify emerging safety trends and recommend safety improvement initiatives.
- Conduct training sessions across various safety systems.
- Establish and lead an investigation quality working group to maintain capability of investigation facilitators.
- Analyses and provides advice on safety risk management activities (e.g. culture, risk assessments, controls)
- Develops and implements safety improvement strategies and practices
- Develops and implements cross-functional or cross-asset improvement initiatives based on industry best practice to enhance organisational capability and culture in responding to safety related risks.
About You
You will be a self-motivated professional with a solid record or accomplishment of achieving results through influence, coaching and mentoring.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Previous experience in a safety role.
- A tertiary qualification, or equivalent industry experience managing safety.
- Certificate IV in OHS.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to influence at multiple levels in an organisation.
- Coaching and mentoring skills with a genuine desire to help people, achieve outcomes and support continuous improvement.
- Experience with facilitating safety incident investigations.
- Sound data analytical skills.
- A current C class motor licence or equivalent Australian state motor vehicle licence.
Roster
We are seeking to fill roles within BHPs new and exciting South Australian Copper Asset at Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carrapateena.
FIFO rosters (7/7 or 5/2) will be available across all sites, as well as residential roles for Olympic Dam. Flexible work options will be considered.

Roxby Downs is located about 560 kilometres north of Adelaide (about 1 hr flight to the Olympic Dam Airport). The Olympic Dam mine is a large poly-metallic underground mine located in South Australia, 550 km NNW of Adelaide. It is the fourth largest copper deposit and the largest known single deposit of uranium in the world
The Prominent Hill mine is a major copper, silver, and gold mine in northwest South Australia, 130 km south-east of Coober Pedy and 130km north-west of Olympic Dam.
The Carrapateena mine is a large copper mine under development in South Australia’s Far North region 100 km southeast of Olympic Dam and approximately 160km north of Port Augusta. Carrapateena represents one of the largest copper reserves in Australia.
