Pastoral Station Supervisor

About the role

Reporting to the Superintendent Pastoral Stations and working in a challenging and diverse role on Juna Downs our Pilbara Cattle Station. Juna Downs is a station that has been de-stocked for several years and Rio Tinto is looking to restock with a small number of cattle initially. The station needs infrastructure installed, upgraded and maintained to ensure cattle can return in 2023. Key components of your role will be to;

• Plan and coordinate operational activities
• Provide direction to staff to ensure they are working in-line with Rio Tinto standards
• Manage staff accommodation and meals
• Recruitment and onboarding of seasonal staff
• Application of safety standards and processes across stations and within the team
• Support the Supt Pastoral Operations to manage budget and identify cost savings
• Coordinate general maintenance and repair of all property infrastructure
• Deliver best practice animal husbandry to enhance herd performance
• Coordinate, plan and execute mustering of livestock for marking and sales in accordance with the mustering schedule developed with Supt Pastoral Operations
• Maintain accurate records of stock movements, draft sheets, animal husbandry (i.e., vaccine records), fuel & oil use purchases and daily rainfall
• Manage contractors and suppliers, including cattle trucks and helicopters
• Setting up the station to enable restocking with water points, fencing where required and upgrade to the operational area
• Ensuring water points are checked and maintained and making sure that the tanks are suitable for livestock accessing enough water
• Demonstrating a strong focus on health and safety, ensuring all aspects are carried out safely and efficiently
• Responsible for general maintenance and cleanliness of all property infrastructure including fencing
• Mustering livestock for marking and sales in accordance with the mustering schedule and following animal husbandry procedures
• Keeping and providing accurate records of stock movements, draft sheets, animal husbandry, fuel & oil use purchases and daily rainfall
• Responsible for stock yard maintenance for the safe handling of livestock
• Interested in Research & Development with the ability to assist in R&D projects

What you’ll bring

• A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
• Competence to install pastoral station infrastructure such as water points.
• Management experience in the Pastoral Beef industry
• Demonstrated sound knowledge of all aspects in Cattle Animal Husbandry including mustering & processing
• The ability to teach and train stockpersons in horsemanship and cattle handling skills in a safe manner.
• Strong communication skills combined with the ability to keep and maintain records
• Understanding of heritage obligations under the agreements with Traditional Owner groups.
• Strong leadership skills and the ability to build and maintain a positive work environment
