Where you will be working

The Bell Bay smelter was initially built back in 1955 to overcome Australia’s dependence on imported aluminium. Our northern Tasmanian site was chosen thanks to its proximity to a deep-water port and for Tasmania’s clean, hydroelectric generating capacity. In our first year of operation, we produced just 1,200 tonnes of aluminium.

Today, after decades of collaboration, innovation and investment, there is a strong sense of history, family and pride at Bell Bay Aluminium. Generations work alongside each other at our site, and we are proud to be part of the community.

Our site is situated at the mouth of the kanamaluka / Tamar River, approximately five kilometres from George Town and 45 kilometres from Launceston. Nearly 500 employees work here, making Bell Bay Aluminium one of northern Tasmania’s largest private employers.

Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, we produce around 190,000 tonnes of aluminium annually. Most of our metal is exported around the world to be used in industries ranging from transport, construction, packaging and electrical.
