Plant Metallurgist
Work Location: Iron Bridge - Fortescue’s Iron Bridge project is located on the traditional lands of the Nyamal people.

Iron Bridge is Fortescue’s greenfields project, set to deliver 22 mtpa of high grade 67% Fe magnetite concentrate product. Located 145km by road south of Port Hedland, the mine will deliver an innovative process design and industry-leading energy efficient operation. Iron Bridge represents Fortescue’s latest operation culminating in a new OPF/CHF, new technologies and camp facilities.
We are looking to recruit for a Plant Metallurgist to initially commission and then later help manage the metallurgical function of our brand-new Magnetite Mining Operation at Iron Bridge.
The Plant Metallurgist is responsible for monitoring and improving plant performance. You will champion metallurgical and capital improvement processes in the Ore Processing Facility. To achieve this, the successful applicant will work closely with the metallurgical, laboratory and operations teams across site. We will all work together to create a world class working culture, that suits our world class mining operation.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Maintain conduct in line with Fortescue health, safety and environmental policies, including coaching of others, participation in Risk Assessments, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and incident investigations
- Develop appropriate technical strategies to achieve production targets and ensure quality, including routine and ad-hoc reporting, thorough data analysis, and review of data from the analytical laboratory
- Identification and implementation of process improvement initiatives, encompassing the development of; operational strategies, changes to equipment specifications and targets, and process control optimisation
- Liaise with the mine planning and geo-metallurgy teams to ensure ore feed characteristics are well understood and forecast, and process plant parameters are optimised, for maximum production volume, quality, and cost efficiency
- Drive continuous improvement to optimise safety, production, cost, and efficiency of our Iron Bridge operations
Qualifications and skills required:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering in Extractive Metallurgy or Process/Chemical Engineering
- Sound knowledge of, or a keen interest in, mineral processing test work and equipment
- Preferable but not a requirement: experience in comminution, fine grinding mills, magnetic separation and/or hydro-separators
- Driver’s license (C-Class unrestricted manual) and a safety-first attitude towards driving
- Magnetite and/or complex metallurgical processing experience or a passion to learn
