Cloud Platform Engineer (Azure)

Work Location: Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday (On-call availability for 1 week in 6)

The Platform Engineer (Azure) will be responsible for operationalising the Cloud Platform and working with application developers to automate and accelerate the testing, release and deployment of applications into the cloud environment quickly and reliably. The Senior DevOps Engineer will have a background in development, operations, and full-stack implementations. They will also have experience programming in a high-level language such as Python, Java, C# or other language to script installation, infrastructure as code, configuration management and automated provisioning. They will be providing continuous delivery solutions in a cloud environment and have experience with the core suite of tools used to manage different cloud providers

The Platform Engineer will establish and employ Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment practices and tools. They will have experience in the use of configuration management automation tools such as infrastructure as code (or other such tools) in creating continuous delivery systems. They employ industry Continuous Delivery patterns and collaboratively work with other members to achieve successful continuous delivery solutions.

The ideal candidate will have a demosratable experience with Azure understand operationalise of Enterprise Landing Zones. In addition, 5 or more years’ experience in designing large and complex IT operations in large organisations (preferably mining), a research or academic environment is required. The Platform Engineer will be responsible for mentoring and teaching existing team members. As such, the ideal candidate must have experience clearly explaining solutions to complex problems and demonstrate the ability to lead and impart knowledge effectively to junior resources

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Lead the build, deployment, and operations of automated cloud enabled patterns, tools, and platforms
  •  Develop and maintain the Cloud Platform services – Governance, Policy, Identity Management, Security, Network and Automation tooling
  • Work with the Product Owner to gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of existing services and systems; develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems.
  • Set direction and oversight for the consistent use and implementation of tools, standards, methods and processes to ensure that quality services are developed with consistent and maintainable code which supports risk, secure operations, and compliance management
  • Develop automation code that replaces manual work activity to request, deploy, and support cloud workloads in AWS, Azure and GCP
  • Manage the deployment of workloads via CI/CD to Azureusing Infrastructure as Code (IAC) tooling (Terraform HCL and Azure ARM)
  • Facilitate and enable other teams  to adopt cloud native development practices
  • Developing and amending templates in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) deployments to ensure requests meet application requirements.
  • Design and implement Infrastructure as Code
  • Be pro-active, taking ownership of issues and pushing them through to resolution
  • Be a strong advocate for a DevOps culture with our Product Development and Operations teams
  • Manage work streams through JIRA with Agile Project Management methodology

Qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, systems analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience (Desirable)
  • 5 + years of experience spanning at least two IT disciplines, including technical architecture, application development, or operations (Highly Desirable)
  • High-level language such as Python or other language (Desirable)
  • AWS / Azure / GCP Cloud Certification – Professional or Expert level (Desirable)
  • Strong system administration (Linux/Unix or Windows) at the command-line level.
  • Adept at evaluating problems accurately and displaying sound judgment
  • Familiarity with a broad portfolio of Cloud (Azure) infrastructure tools
  • Infrastructure as Code: design and security, configuration management, integration, deployment, performance monitoring and tuning, automation of infrastructure – Cloud Formations, Azure Resource Manager, Terraform
  • Scripting (shell, python, PowerShell) or configuration management (Ansible, Puppet) skills for monitoring and automation
  • Continuous integration /Continuous Deployment tools such as Azure DevOps, Gitlab
  • Experience optimizing applications, both stand-alone and in distributed systems to maximize performance
  • Experience maintaining an infrastructure and ensuring stability while adding new features
  • Ability to clearly articulate design and implementation choices
  • Possess a solid grasp of automation tools
  • Experience developing with RESTful API interfaces
  • Comfort with collaboration, open communication and reaching across functional borders
