As Practice lead – biodiversity within Rio Tinto’s Environment Area of Expertise (AoE), you will play a pivotal role in shaping, driving and delivering Rio Tinto's global environment strategy.

A key responsibility of the Environment AoE is the development and implementation of Rio Tinto’s nature strategy. Key components of the strategy include the positioning, scoping and delivery of the company’s biodiversity program to meet its nature position statement commitments.

Reporting directly to the Head of Environment AoE, your primary focus will be to work closely with the broader environment function and other stakeholders to lead and deliver this exciting package of work.

Reporting to the Head of Environment AoE and working with a global, collaborative team, you will:

  • Assist the Head of Environment to develop, roll-out, track and support the implementation of Rio Tinto’s nature strategy, including the delivery of the company’s nature position statement biodiversity commitments

  • Support the Head of Environment to foster and promote an organisational culture that respects the environment and leverages innovation to continuously improve environmental and sustainability performance

  • Develop and lead the Environment AoE global biodiversity team

  • Champion the Rio Tinto biodiversity standards and guidelines

  • Leverage internal synergies, collaborate and ensure alignment on biodiversity management across Rio Tinto, including the strengthening of support links with the Health AoE, Safety AoE, and the Communities and Social Performance (CSP) AoE

  • Drive a risk-based approach to biodiversity performance that ensures biodiversity risks are well integrated to ensure both short-term management and long-term stewardship across the business

  • Monitor global trends and perform regular benchmarking, horizon scanning for best practices, trends and innovation

  • Oversee the development of biodiversity related programs and advisory support to Product Groups or assets

  • Engage and represent Rio Tinto on biodiversity topics with global organisations (eg ICMM, MAC, MCA, etc), conservation and civil society organisations, and intergovernmental processes

  • Prepare briefing papers, reports, business responses for Board, Executive Committee, Sustainability Committee, investors, and CSO and NGO engagements

  • Create an enabling and stimulating climate for environment professionals at all levels to share knowledge, seek support and grow their careers

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

  • Bachelor’s degree in ecology, environmental science, environmental engineering, or other related field

  • Postgraduate qualifications in the environmental sciences would be highly desirable

  • Experience across different commodities, countries, operations, coupled with diversity of thinking

  • Experienced in developing, implementing and managing complex programs, particularly those relating to biodiversity and broader environmental protection

  • Demonstrated inclusive and operational leadership experience with a people-centric approach and a track record of delivery/implementation

  • Excellent strategic capability and an understanding of complex issues and risk management

  • A proven ability to work with inter-disciplinary teams and committees as well as external stakeholders

  • The ability to synthesise information with a clear narrative

  • Capacity to organise, track and manage routine and abnormal activities

  • Excellent ability to build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders in a global organisation and influence perspectives
