About the roleGroup Technical, which is part of Rio Tinto’s Development and Technology (D&T) Group, guides the development of global operating practices, standards, guidelines and tools. We are looking for a Practice Leader Surface Mining in Group Technical’s Surface Mining Centre of Excellence to provide support to Rio Tinto’s Product Groups and improve the health of the discipline across Rio Tinto to have a material impact on the sustainability of Rio Tinto.
The D&T group operates through the entire life cycle of Rio Tinto’s mines and assets, creating value through exploration, project development and technical excellence. Working in close partnership with all product groups, it focuses on finding safer, smarter and more efficient ways to manage resources and operations.This role is a great opportunity to provide operational and technical input, advice and support to studies, projects and operations across all the groups’ diverse portfolio with the aim to achieving leading practice safety, operational and financial performance.
Reporting to the Chief Advisor Surface Mining, Practice and Performance, you will be:
- Assisting to translate D&T strategies and models into a comprehensive discipline tactics for influencing and embedding operational plans across Rio Tinto surface operations and major project studies.
- Developing and maintaining, in collaboration with others, relevant written Group-wide solutions, guidelines, measures and metrics for surface mining activities and processes
- Providing expert surface mining operational and technical advice and direction to senior management of operations/projects for the management of key technical risks and opportunities
- Providing senior technical leadership, coaching and mentoring of other surface mining professionals to develop individual and team capabilities
What You’ll Bring
- A degree qualification in mining engineering or other relevant discipline
- Technical and operational understanding of surface mine operating practices and the impact of the mining operations on value chain outcomes
- Significant experience in mining technical and operational roles
- In-depth understanding of mining engineering and a track record of generating practical and innovative solutions to multi-faceted technical and operational problems
- Demonstrated leadership capability of technical and/or operational teams
- Technical writing and presentation skills for capturing and communicating improvement initiatives throughout the group
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Experience in influencing and negotiating at senior (executive) levels within a global mining organisation
