Our Advanced Analytics team is part of the Research, Development & Technology (RDT) division of Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) whose primary purpose is to accelerate our R&D and digital transformation program.

We are highly collaborative and work in close partnership with Rio Tinto’s global R&D and Analytics community, as well as external bodies such as research institutes, suppliers, and industry partners. The work focuses on improving performance by driving an innovative and disruptive technology culture. By partnering with Rio Tinto product groups and functions, our team develops innovative ideas to solve problems and enable better decisions through data analytics.

Reporting to the Manager, Digital Transformation, and working in close partnership with the Technology Integration Principals, as the Principal, Advanced Analytics you will lead and support the team to design and develop products and services that solve high value business problems and provide insight to making improved decisions for our Iron Ore business.

The team are currently supporting our Integrated Operation’s transformation journey which aims to reshape how RTIO plans, schedules, and operates our integrated value chain. As our R&D portfolio grows, the opportunity to contribute to broader business programs in the areas of health and safety, productivity, and growth, as well as environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance, is huge. The RDT portfolio touches all parts of our Iron Ore business, from resource development through to closure, including large-scale integrated operations across mines, rail, ports, and customers.

Key responsibilities and activities of the role include:

  • Fostering an innovative and disruptive technology culture to identify and drive value-creating opportunities
  • Communication and translation of business problems into technical opportunities
  • Ongoing development and refinement of social, technical, process, and quality systems in support of scaling the team's capability
  • Partnering with the Technology Integration team to identify and engage with key business stakeholders and subject matter experts, and undertaking value identification and value-engineering from an analytics perspective
  • Developing platforms and processes that support the reproducibility of products
  • Leading and mentoring the advanced analytics team, providing professional development and coaching to progress their skills and careers
  • Influencing the technical evolution of data services and data platforms to enable the strategic aspirations of the group in advanced analytics
  • Providing training and knowledge transfer to support the deployment and continuity of the analytics products developed

What you’ll bring

Ideally you will have experience in building, shaping and leading product-delivery teams with a focus on ML and AI solutions. You will have an ability to identity new opportunities for the application of advanced analytics across a range of industrial and enterprise solution spaces. You will have a qualification in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Machine Learning, or a related field.

  • Experience managing and influencing stakeholders across multi-functional teams
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose and logically resolve technical problems
  • Agile delivery and project management. Strong understanding of end to end product development in AI/ML space
  • Cloud based solution design using containerisation and serverless architectures in AWS and/or Azure (Cloud Formation/ARM)
  • Knowledge in change control using Git and release pipeline experience using Azure DevOps
  • Proficiency in SQL, Python/ R, Linux (Bash), Scala and Go
  • Knowledge and skills in one or more of the big data frameworks, i.e., Spark, Hive, Hadoop
  • Software engineering experience desirable

Where you’ll be working

This role is based in Perth, Western Australia, out of our Central Park (Perth City) and Operation Centre (Perth Airport) office, working Monday – Friday, with ad hoc travel to sites in the Pilbara. We support and encourage flexible working arrangements.
