About the role
We are looking for a Principal Adviser Cost to help the Rio Tinto Projects team deliver the successful execution of the Gove Refinery Closure project. In this role, you will support project controls across forecasting, cost management, estimating, and reporting activities that support informed decision-making and project performance. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working on technically challenging, large-scale projects and wants to play a key role in a significant closure program while building capability within a collaborative team environment.
What you’ll be doing
Reporting to the Gove Portfolio Project Controls Manager and working in a collaborative and supportive team within SD&T Project Services for Major Projects, you will:
Lead project cost control, forecasting and monthly performance reporting to support accurate project outcomes and decision-making
Manage and mentor a small team of project controls professionals, supporting capability development and continuous improvement
Oversee project estimating activities and evaluate scenario options to support project planning and execution decisions
Partner with contracts and construction teams to assess proposals, variations and claims while maintaining commercial awareness
Facilitate project change management processes and ensure impacts to cost and schedule are accurately accessed and communicated
Review cost and progress data, identify trends and risks, and provide recommendations to improve forecasting accuracy
Build trusted relationships with senior project leaders, contractors and key stakeholders to align forecasts, schedules and project priorities
Support integrated project controls outcomes by working across cost, progress and schedule information to drive performance visibility

Required for Success
A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
Demonstrated capability in project controls, including cost control, forecasting, estimating, change management and project performance reporting
Significant experience supporting major capital, closure, infrastructure, resources, energy, renewables or heavy industrial projects, including leadership of project controls activities and teams
Proven ability to evaluate commercial proposals, claims and project scenarios while influencing a broad range of stakeholders
A qualification in project management, engineering, construction, commercial, finance or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
Advanced capability with Excel and experience using project cost management and project controls systems
Helpful for Success
Understanding of project scheduling and integrated project controls practices
Experience in mining, oil and gas, renewables, construction or other large-scale industrial environments
