About the role

We are looking for a Principal Advisor – Closure Research & Development to plan, direct and oversee the execution of our global Closure R&D program encompassing the development, scale-up and adoption of emerging in-situ and remote sensing technology solutions for environmental monitoring and characterisation of mining-influenced waters (MIW), soil, sediment, and mineral and industrial wastes.

Reporting to the Manager – Closure Research & Development, and working in a rewarding environment within the global Closure Strategy and Optimisation team, you will:

  • Build a pipeline of projects (technology development stages), scopingand shaping their business cases with due consideration of our IP position, technical and commercial risks and financial and non-financial (ESG) value metrics
  • Build partnerships and negotiate agreements with other industry and technology players and/or research organisations to advance the technology readiness level
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the advancements and emerging technologies within your program’s domain
  • Provide direction, oversight and first-level governance to the project leads assigned to each of the R&D initiatives
  • Coordinate the development and adoption of informatic tools to assist in the day-to-day management of the project portfolio
  • Provide hands-on project and technical management, evaluating progress and results, and iterating the development, commercial and procurement strategies required to accelerate scale-up and adoption.

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Proven experience in assembling and leading R&D and technology validation portfolios, including laboratory-based and capital-intensive projects for technology development and scale-up
  • Knowledge of potential partners through networks of relevance to Rio Tinto and its closure activities
  • Tertiary qualifications in science/engineering (e.g. geosciences, environmental, physics, electronics)
  • Demonstrated experience influencing key decision-makers and senior executives in a large, cross-functional environment
  • Capacity for divergent thinking combined with an entrepreneurial and venture investment mindset

It will also be beneficial if you have research networks and applied experience in the development and application of sensing technology solutions in one or more of the following technology domains:

  • Environmental monitoring (e.g. soil, water, air)
  • Mineral an industrial waste characterisation, including rock dumps and tailings
