We are looking for a Principal Advisor – Improvement to support the delivery of Rio Tinto Projects’ Capital Effectiveness (CE) programme across our global growth portfolio. This role is responsible for supporting Study and Project teams to effectively implement the CE programme, including identification of minimum viable capital cost (MVCC) options in the early stages of studies, optimisation of selected options in later studies and implementation of Lean in Construction to drive productivity during execution. As well as developing the tools, framework and governance to support and continually improve the programme, and share learnings across the portfolio.
This role is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic and results-driven individual to join the Project Practices and Improvement (PPI) team and positively impact by driving continuous improvement and innovation across Rio Tinto’s major capital projects. Reporting to the Manager Improvement, you will:
- Work with a wide range of Study and Project personnel to plan, facilitate and deliver capital effectiveness engagements across a global portfolio.
- Set in place governance processes to ensure identified value is delivered through the life of the study
- Lead small teams through structured improvement methodologies (Lean, 6 Sigma) to deliver cost, schedule and other step change performance improvements.
- Provide capability uplift across teams through training, coaching and mentoring
- Work with project teams to put in place metrics to support project success, identify root causes for performance issues, and implement practical, sustainable solutions.
- Manage the ideas generation pipeline, working with project teams to identify, review and track improvement initiatives to create and preserve value for the business
What you will bring
To be considered for this role, you will have:
- Bachelor’s degree or extensive relevant industry experience
- Extensive demonstrated ability to engage, influence, and develop effective relationships with key stakeholders to deliver results
- Expertise in planning and delivering complex engagements, with the ability to work effectively across areas of the business outside of your technical specialty
- Excellent communication (both written and oral), interpersonal and facilitation skills
- Excellent skills in documentation, report writing, and preparation of presentations
It will also be beneficial if you have one or more of the following:
- Six Sigma Black Belt, Lean certification, or other Business Improvement methodology is highly regarded
- Proven experience in delivering business improvement initiatives & processes on large scale complex projects within a mining, petrochemical, or construction environment
- Previous experience in study leadership or EPCM project management

Where you will be working
Rio Tinto Projects helps to grow our business by building new mines and assets and studying the different options for both new construction projects and operations approaching closure. We are recognised for delivering safely, on time and on budget or better. We have won multiple awards for our work, including at the Amrun Bauxite mine in North Queensland, Australia, and on the AutoHaul™ driverless trains in the Pilbara, Western Australia.
There will be occasional domestic and international travel based in either Perth or Brisbane. We offer a flexible working arrangement with a balance of office-based and work from home. There is an ongoing requirement for flexible hours outside the standard working day to support colleagues in alternative time zone. The ability to schedule your time flexibly around this requirement will be offered in return.
