About the role

The Principal Advisor Indigenous Relations supports the Global Chief Advisor Indigenous Relations in leading the rebuild of Rio Tinto’s relationships and reputation through strategic engagements and policy insights on Indigenous matters and internal advocacy.

Reporting to the Global Chief Advisor Indigenous Relations, in the Communities and Social Performance (CSP) Area of Expertise (AoE), this role will:

  • Proactively support Rio Tinto’s product groups and functions in Australia with advice, insight and guidance on Indigenous policy matters.

  • Facilitate the development of the company’s Australian national Indigenous relations plans and strategies, including collaboration with Australian product groups and functions.

  • Directly assist with the development of new global Indigenous relations policies, including a new global Indigenous People’s Policy and providing guidance on developing Indigenous rights concerns.

  • Monitor the resolution of formally identified risks and grievances whilst assisting with the necessary assurance requirements and activities.

The CSP AoE supports the achievement of Rio Tinto’s business’ objectives by building strong partnerships based on relationships of mutual trust and respect. This includes the way we engage with communities and the steps we take to identify and manage social, economic, environmental, cultural, and human rights impacts throughout the life cycle of our projects, from exploration, to project development, to operation and closure.

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety and wellbeing of yourself and your team, and to our values of care, courage and curiosity

  • Demonstrated work experience in Indigenous Relations or a related field including law, policy, government relations or social science

  • Degree level qualifications in a related discipline (desirable)

  • Demonstrated cultural competency

  • Extensive demonstrated experience in managing complex problems in a large, networked organisation

  • Lived experience with Indigenous groups, peoples or employees

  • Academic or professional work experience with understanding better practices for Indigenous reconciliation strategies (such as RAPs) and policies for Indigenous Peoples

  • Proven success in strategic project or program delivery and management, stakeholder management and project or program risk management

  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship management and influencing skills, including with senior leaders

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Where you’ll be working

The CSP AoE is Rio Tinto’s Technical CSP function. It provides support to the business to build respectful and trusted relationships with host communities that deliver sustainable improvements in social and economic outcomes. The AoE works with CSP practitioners and leaders across the business to build capability, support social performance delivery, monitor, and respond to emerging trends, and provide assurance and risk management. The AoE also maintains Rio Tinto’s management systems, CSP standards and reporting process.
