We are looking for a Principal Advisor, Media Relations to join the global Media Relations team. The role will be based in Brisbane but will also require frequent travel on the East Coast of Australia.
This position will play an important role supporting Australian-based media activity, particularly relating to the company’s East Coast-based businesses and executives and Group corporate activity, which are covered closely by general and business media across the country.
The role will report to the Senior Manager, Media Relations, providing strategic advice on media activities.
This role provides a great opportunity to work across a range of projects with responsibilities including:
- Support delivery of Rio Tinto’s global media relations strategy in Australia
- Support development and execution of media strategy for East Coast-based Executive Committee members
- Provide day-to-day guidance and advice on both reactive and proactive media engagements and devise strategies to best handle those matters.
- Identify and manage potential and actual business risks and issues to ensure best possible management of Rio Tinto’s reputation – liaising with all levels of staff and management, as well as a diverse group of external stakeholders.
- Proactively work with product groups, assets, country teams and functions to ensure clear and timely engagement and communication with media.
- Building and maintaining an appropriate network across mainstream, regional and business media.
- Assist with review and implementation of Group-wide media relations policy, procedures, guidelines and other tools (e.g. training programs)
What you will bring
- More than 8 years experience in media relations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- An understanding of a broad range of communication channels, including social media
- Proven ability to prepare, write and edit media announcements and issues identification/briefing papers
- Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to liaise and negotiate with senior management, journalists and other stakeholders
