We are seeking an experienced Principal Advisor Operational Safety to oversee Rio Tinto’s safety programs across our global operations. This role ensures our safety initiatives are executed efficiently and align with our Health, Safety, Environment, and Security (HSES) strategy. This is a great opportunity for a proactive and strategic safety professional with a passion for operational safety.
Reporting to the Practice Lead within the Safety Area of Expertise (AoE), you will lead the implementation and improvement of programs like the Safety Maturity Model, Fatality Elimination and Operational Learning Programs. You will also support facilitation of incident investigations for safety-critical events (Potential Fatal Incidents).
Your analytical skills will be vital for performing in-depth safety data analysis to generate actionable insights. You will oversee safety programs, conduct strategic reviews and audits, and contribute to developing and refining safety guidelines and standards.
You will network with safety organisations and industry partners to support benchmarking and adopt best practices. Staying informed about international best practices and industry partners is essential. Internally, you will collaborate with Safety AoE peers, operational health and safety teams, and operational leaders. Through these efforts, you will help foster a learning organisation mindset and drive a culture of safety excellence within Rio Tinto.
What you’ll bring
- Proven experience in implementing and managing safety programs within a large organisation, preferably in the mining or heavy industries
- Analytical skills with the ability to perform safety data analysis
- Excellent strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities
- Effective communication and networking skills to engage with both internal and external stakeholders
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements and international best practices in safety management
