Rio Tinto’s Sustaining Capital teams within the Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) Pacific Operations portfolio offer fantastic opportunities to grow your skills, network and experience, across a varied range of large-scale sustaining capital projects. Due to an internal career growth opportunity, we are seeking a Principal Advisor - Project Delivery to join the Sustaining Capital residential team located in sunny Gladstone, Central Queensland.
As the Principal Advisor - Project Delivery you will be responsible for the execution of multiple large civil tailings dam projects as well as other mechanical and infrastructure projects within the Refineries capital portfolio to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and on budget, or better. This includes construction input into the feasibility stages of each project, input into the estimation of construction costs and schedules, materials, equipment and human resource planning for execution of the projects.
This position provides leadership to a team of Project Leads that are assigned to deliver capital projects on our Refinery operational sites. You will actively lead a safety focused culture through disciplined compliance with Rio Tinto safety management systems. As the central focus point for project execution activities in Gladstone, this role will co-ordinate key material, equipment and human resources with a priority on workforce diversity.
You will ensure that internal and external stakeholders at all levels are actively engaged, and beneficial relationships between the capital project teams and Operations, subcontractors, community and other external parties are effectively developed and maintained.
Working a Monday-Friday roster or 9-day fortnight, and reporting to the Manager Project Delivery - Refineries, Smelters & Strategic, you will:
- Manage a team of Project Leads to ensure the consistent delivery of the project portfolio safely, within budget and on time or better
- Lead by example and coach the team to continually improve safety performance, take responsibility for own personal safety and working practices and ensure the safety of all others, especially those under direct supervision
- Ensure effective project sponsor and stakeholder engagement throughout the project lifecycle
- Work within a matrix organisation, ensure regular and effective communication with the Project Services team
- Provide construction input to tender review processes and support project study phase requirements including safety, risk, constructability, schedule, cost and lessons learnt
- Develop and implement construction management plans for each project
- Have a clear understanding of project contract terms and conditions, including contract variation and change management processes
- Support development of clear scope of works, tendering and contract negotiations and recommendation to award
- Drive capital intensity, optimisation, cost benchmarking and value addition to the projects through various tools in to take the projects through stage gate approvals in collaboration with other stakeholders including business case analysis
About you
Your ability to build trusted partnerships and communicate effectively at all levels of an organisation will see you excel in this position. Your stakeholder group in this position will be varied, and importantly, you will role model and cultivate a culture that promotes our values of Care, Courage and Curiosity. You will have:
- A degree in Engineering or tertiary/trade qualifications in a related discipline
- Well-developed and adaptable people management skills such as leadership, team, interpersonal, coaching, mentoring and supervisory skills. Must be able to build, motivate, develop and manage an effective team
- Extensive technical, practical and leadership experience in the relevant discipline, including experience in construction management positions
- Bulk earthworks civil experience in residue/tailings facilities
- Excellent management skills including the ability to plan, set goals; and manage time, priorities, resources, accountabilities, schedules and cost
- Well-developed communication skills, both verbal and written
- A thorough understanding of industrial construction environments and proven supervisory experience in multi-disciplinary teams
- Project management certification or qualification is desirable
- Engineers Australia or similar professional membership would be advantageous
Due to the global nature of this position, there is an ongoing requirement for flexible hours outside the standard working day to support colleagues in alternative time zones. The ability to schedule your time flexibly around this requirement will be offered in return. You will also enjoy the opportunity to travel to our operational sites on an adhoc basis.
