Due to an internal promotion, we are seeking a Principal Advisor Health, Safety, Environment and Communities in Design who will be responsible for providing project related Health, Safety, Environment and Communities in Design (HSECiD) advice and guidance to projects within the Rio Tinto Projects portfolio.

This role provides for the development and application of HSECiD across the portfolio of Rio Tinto Project activities with a focus on fatality elimination, catastrophic event prevention and injury reduction during project design. In addition, it provides portfolio support during design hazard studies, project commencement, planning for construction and closure studies.

You will join a collaborative team with a manager who will partner with you to deliver outcomes and encourage you to progress your own professional development. Due to the global nature of this role you will form a strong network across the Rio Tinto Project teams and enjoy a variety of work across a broad range of projects.

Reporting to the Manager Engineering Engagement, you will:

  • Provide technical guidance on Rio Tinto HSECiD and Engineering Hazard management processes for Studies, Projects, Engineering Service Providers, Construction and Closure teams.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to utilise incident data for the purpose of identifying potential fatal and catastrophic risk exposures and influence the design of future assets to eliminate, substitute or engineer out risk prior to operations.
  • Conduct assurance activities to ensure early identification of process gaps and development of mitigative plans to ensure alignment with Rio Tinto systems and process.
  • Consult on strategic planning for the Rio Tinto Projects HSECiD function, ensuring best fit systems, increased efficiency and minimal impact on project schedule and work teams.
  • Ensure inclusion of Rio Tinto Global Standards in study and project engineering reviews, engagement of subject matter experts (within the Rio Tinto Centres of Excellence and external to the business) to provide expertise for disciplines such as Process and Functional safety.
  • Provide adhoc technical advisory services for Rio Tinto Projects teams.

What you will bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • Diploma of Health and Safety.
  • Sound understanding of the principles of HSEC in design associated with major project design and execution including bulk materials handling, mineral processing, underground construction and operations and open pit mining.
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders and maintain a network of contacts across a global portfolio.
  • Ability to travel to both international and Australian based locations which can at times be remote.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Understanding of local, state and country legislation as applicable to HSEC areas.
  • Experience with facilitation of HAZID/HAZOP or similar hazard study tools. Tertiary degree in Health and Safety or equivalent.
  • A current understanding and experience in the application of critical HSEC mining aspects.
  • Engineering and project management qualifications/experience.

Rio Tinto Projects helps to grow our business by building new mines and assets as well as studying the different options for both new construction projects and operations approaching closure. We are recognised for delivering safely, on time and on budget or better and have won multiple awards for our work, including at the Amrun Bauxite mine in North Queensland, Australia and on the AutoHaul™ driverless trains in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

The role can be based in either Perth or Brisbane. We offer a flexible working arrangement with a balance of office-based and work from home hours. There is a requirement for flexibility on working hours outside the standard working day to support colleagues in alternative time zones. Domestic and international travel will also pertain to this role due to the global nature of this position.
