Rio Tinto Exploration is seeking a Principal Advisor Resource Evaluation to join our Resource & Commodity Knowledge (RCK) group. RCK provides technical evaluation across exploration projects from early stage to advanced projects with a focus on resource sensitivities, value, and risk identification. Through orebody knowledge, RCK unlocks value and develops optionality. This role will see you lead the resource evaluation scope of work.

Reporting to the Senior Manager Resource Evaluation & Development and working as part of a globally connected team, your main accountability is to develop a range of mining scenarios that identify risk and highlight opportunities to meet Rio Tinto Exploration’s (RTX) business needs and generative programs. Providing technical assurance and guidance to the business for informed decision making is a key task in this position. You will:
- Develop mine plans and schedules that optimize RTX project resources
- Identify risks/opportunities relative to key value drivers (orebody knowledge, mine designs, CAPEX & OPEX, productivity and recovery assumptions)
- Identify, analyse, and effectively communicate potential value-adding opportunities to various stakeholders (senior leaders, technical reviewers, managers, and peers)
- Support the development of business cases for capital expenditure and project justifications, clearly communicating context and reasoning
- Implement tools and standardized processes to accurately model and optimize the value stream for a variety of commodities
- Participate in Merger and Acquisition (M&A) due diligence
What you’ll bring
Your strong stakeholder management and engagement skills will see you excel in this position. You will utilise your experience in mine planning to drive resource evaluation initiatives across a broad project portfolio, which includes various commodities, project lifecycle phases and stakeholder groups. You will also bring:
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, GeoScience or equivalent
- Proven experience in mine planning (short range, long range, and strategic planning)
- Ability to develop realistic conceptual plans when orebody knowledge is limited
- A strong understanding of production scheduling systems, business value drivers and financial analysis
- Ability to breakdown and communicate complex conclusions to senior leadership
- Previous mine planning experience across various commodities is advantageous, though not essential

Where you’ll be working Rio Tinto's Exploration group seeks to create value for the business by discovering or acquiring new mineral resources. Organized into four regional teams (Americas, Australasia, Africa-Europe and Eurasia), the Exploration group provides both a global reach and a local presence across a range of commodities including bauxite, copper, iron ore, nickel and uranium.
As a global role, there is an ongoing requirement for flexible hours outside the standard working day to support colleagues in alternative time zones. The ability to schedule your time flexibly around this requirement will be offered in return.
