The decarbonisation of the steel industry between now and future is likely to change the iron ore supply chain as we know it. The next 20 years will see the largest and fastest change in iron and steelmaking technology the industry has seen in decades. Positioning Rio Tinto as sustainability leaders is key in realising our ambitions, strategy and growth agenda. The Steel Decarbonisation team is at the forefront of this and will shape pathways for Rio Tinto’s iron ores in a decarbonised iron and steelmaking future.

The purpose of the Rio Tinto Steel Decarbonisation (RTSD) team is to:

  • Protect the long-term value of Rio Tinto’s iron ore through development and scale up of cost-effective technologies that utilise our iron ores in the future low-carbon steel industry
  • To position Rio Tinto to participate in the nascent green iron market, and
  • To provide steel decarbonisation analysis and intelligence to support decisions on Rio Tinto’s future iron ore resource portfolio, product strategy, and renewable energy development.

We are now looking for a Principal Advisor – Sustainability

This role will lead our biomass and sustainability program in the RT steel decarbonisation team.

Reporting to the Principal Advisor – Low Carbon Ironmaking, you will

  • Lead sustainability aspects of steel decarbonisation projects and related research programs.
  • Responsible for leading programs on sustainable sourcing of biomass and other energy sources.
  • Supports of Biomass evaluation program for BioIronTM Continuous Pilot Plant and leads sustainable sourcing program.
  • Leads Civil Society Organisation (CSO) engagements on Biomass use and BioIronTM technology.
  • Liaise with communications, investor relations and external relations team on Biomass and other sustainability aspects of steel decarbonisation programs.
  • Responsible for life iron and steel cycle assessment and carbon accounting research.
  • Supports discussions with local, state and federal government on biomass and steel industry policy.
  • Maintain knowledge base of iron and steel decarbonisation regulation.
  • Liaises with RT climate change office on hydrogen/energy/biomass regulation and studies.

What you’ll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Strong EQ and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to work well with myriad range of stakeholders
  • Ability to influence and get stakeholders along on the pathway
  • Strong commercial acumen with Project Management experience
  • Knowledgeable in Biomass Agriculture
  • Life Cycle Assessment of sustainability projects
  • Carbon and Energy Accounting
  • Ability to execute 3rd party research contracts.
  • University degree in Environmental Engineering/Science/Management or post grade qualification in Sustainability
