About the role

We are looking for a Principal Advisor Water to join the Resource and Commodity Knowledge team to provide technical leadership to advanced exploration projects globally.

This role is a great opportunity for someone who is hands on, adaptable, and passionate about bringing new ore body knowledge skills to evaluation and discovery in the Exploration Group. Must be willing to spend significant time in the field working closely with project teams.

Reporting to the Senior Manager Technical, you will:

  • Provide leading practice, holistic, and practical water management guidance for advanced projects globally, ensuring that all projects consider the criticality of water in their environment
  • Work closely with the Centres and Areas of Excellence to ensure appropriate alignment of projects with water leading practice across Rio Tinto
  • Engage and guide project teams through project planning and execution and mentor and train interested individuals to grow workforce capability
  • Undertake field work to support advanced projects including design and implementation of water investigations and sampling programs appropriate for the project evaluation stage, from early exploration through to pre-feasibility
  • Create and maintain key relationships with exploration management (Exploration Mangers, Project Mangers etc.) and with Business Unit owner teams for projects where the department are actively participating in evaluation and risk assessment
  • Ownership and management of water management risks including preparing and planning risk assessments/action plans with key stakeholders
  • Participate in due diligence activities to assess the appropriateness of hydrological\ hydrogeological work presented as part of a potential transaction.

What you’ll bring

  • A Bachelors Degree in Geological or Civil Engineering, Hydrogeology or Hydrology
  • Significant experience in water management in mining and/or consulting roles
  • Expertise in hydrogeological and hydrological investigations, monitoring and analysis relating to water management processes and structures
  • Proven ability to successfully design and implement water management systems in a range of challenging mining operations and projects
  • A good understanding of the mining industry
  • Demonstrated successful management and delivery of projects on time and within budget
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with senior technical professionals and senior leaders to achieve outcomes through the sharing of expertise, skills, and technical capability
  • An ability to critically respond to project proposals combined with a strong interest in developing practical solutions and brining new industry technology to the Group
  • A willingness to train and mentor others ensuring that water issues are understood and embedded throughout the team as a key part of Orebody Knowledge
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, a C class driver’s license, and a shared vision for an injury free workplace where safety, teamwork, respect, integrity, and excellence are valued.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • A Masters Degree or PhD in Geological or Civil Engineering, Hydrogeology or Hydrology
  • Membership of relevant professional societies
  • Language skills in Spanish, French or Portuguese
