About the Role

BHP Maintenance and Engineering Centre of Excellence (MECoE) is the coming together of a dedicated, innovative team focused on identifying, achieving and maintaining the highest standards in maintenance for BHP globally.

The Principal Asset Planning is a key role driving the synergies between multiple BHP operations, functions and Assets, ensuring that we have a common approach for managing our mining equipment assets, and that equipment selection aligns with our long term plans.

Reporting to the Manager of Asset Planning and Standards, this role will perform in-depth modelling and analysis and provide recommendations to manage mining equipment. This role will provide a global view of equipment requirements and key decisions relating to repurposing, re-deployment, purchase or retirement of capital equipment. This role will ensure that we deliver equipment and asset requirements to meet production demand and our decarbonization plans.

This role will be performed from either our Brisbane, Adelaide, or Perth office, working Monday to Friday offering flexible conditions. Occasional site travel is required in this role and supported by the latest technology to engage with our sites around the Australia and the globe.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Developing cost estimation methodologies used for fleet and equipment to account for the long-term use, maintenance, upgrade, rationalisation, future technology implementations  and productivity requirements across BHP.
  • Performing advanced and sophisticated modelling, incorporating advanced analytics and data-driven techniques. Proficient in creating detailed and strategic plans for fleet and equipment optimisation.
  • Driving the selection of fleet and equipment transition across regional level Assets to minimise operational costs and enhance productivity.
  • Assessing the current fleet performance against global best practice and metrics to enhance haulage system productivity across BHP and the industry.
  • Collaborating with senior leadership at multiple Assets to implement best practice fleet and equipment management approaches that improve the utilisation of future technology systems.

As part of the Asset Planning & Standards Team within BMA the following attributes will be key to your success;  

  • A proven commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility, and sustainable development.
  • Have a strong focus on continuous improvement and the ability to demonstrate end value associated across work fronts.
  • 10 years demonstrated operational experience in a similar role in heavy industry Asset Management or coupled with a degree in Engineering or similar.
  • Experience in mining equipment, application, maintenance engineering/and or studies. In-depth knowledge of equipment specifications, operational characteristics, and maintenance requirements.
  • Advance understanding and application of mine planning for open cut operations with demonstrable experience in the selection and application of mining equipment in consideration of the Mine Plans.
  • ​​​​​​Proficiency in developing cost models that simulate various scenarios and assess the financial impact of different variables or assumptions.
  • Understanding of financial metrics and techniques for evaluating the financial viability of projects, such as net present value (NPV), Tornado range analysis, internal rate of return (IRR), cost-benefit analysis, etc.
  • Proficiency in collecting, analysing, and interpreting relevant data to inform decision-making processes across multiple assets and scenarios. This includes utilising key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate fleet and equipment performance and make data-driven recommendations.
  • Proficiency in using simulation and optimisation software for equipment selection will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrate a proven track record in providing strategic insights and recommendations based on fleet modelling outcomes.
  • You will have proficient effective communication skills to collaborate with regional stakeholders (e.g., operations managers, finance team) and external partners (e.g., OEM's) to gather requirements, present recommendations, and negotiate contracts.
  • It is essential that you are a team player who promotes and supports workplace diversity.
  • You will be proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, SAP, Power BI and Mine Planning Software and tools.
