ABOUT PERTH OFFICE
South32’s corporate office is based in the heart of Perth’s CBD. The corporate office houses key functions including HR, Finance, Corporate Development, Investor Relations, Group Risk and Technical. Our office is conveniently located a 5-minute walk from the Perth Underground Train Station.

ABOUT THE ROLE
This is a 12-month fixed term full-time position, Monday through Friday.
The Commercial Principal will be part of the Business Development team, which seeks to create, unlock and protect the value of South32’s global operations. You will lead strategic opportunities by identifying, evaluating, prioritising and negotiating transactions on a value and risk basis to support the Company’s business plan.
Other key responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Leading the development of negotiations mandates, business cases and transaction structures, interrogating and developing contractual agreements, coordinating cross functional teams, engaging with external counterparts and building commercial acumen across the business.
- Types of opportunities include:
- Expanding or acquiring additional capacity required or deriving commercial benefits from excess capacity of existing assets.
- Exploring opportunities to generate value by partnering/collaborating with adjacent operations or external parties to maximise utilisation of assets, equipment or infrastructure.
- Ensuring timely access to land/ mineral rights for the development of mining areas and infrastructure to support the long-term mine plan.
- Greenfield exploration 'farm-in’ arrangements, joint ventures and innovation partnerships.
ABOUT YOU
You will have experience and demonstrate capability in the following:
- Several years’ experience in a commercial environment is essential.
- Experience in developing commercial strategies and leading high-value strategic negotiations.
- Combination of strategic and innovative thinking capability, with balanced commercial judgement.
- Understanding of discount cash flow and valuations methodologies.
- Experience in transaction structuring and transaction/project management.
- Effective communication skills (both written and verbal), including experience in presenting to and influencing senior management.
Qualifications for this position are:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Finance, Law or related disciplines
