The Opportunity – Permanent, Full Time Position
This exciting opportunity to join a high performing and passionate team where you as Principal – Copper Processing will have two core focus areas:
- Technology Strategy and Development for Cu Projects - To identify opportunities for innovation in processing and the application of novel technologies aimed to improve safety, productivity and efficiency for South 32’s copper projects
- Technology Development support for other Process Technology projects: To support existing programs with the selection and development of technologies for projects related to the Battery Chemicals Market Reporting to the Practice Lead – Processing Technology key role accountabilities will include:
Individual Accountabilities
Strategy & Planning
- Contribute to the formulation of the Copper Processing Technology vision, plan, and strategy, with focus on identifying the opportunities for innovation in greenfield projects or exploration targets, considering the short, medium, and long-term horizons.
- Contribute to the strategic prioritization of technology initiatives related to Greenfield projects and studies
- Monitor progress of technology programs of work against major project and organizational strategies
Customer Engagement
- Engage and foster close working relationships with the operations, Project teams, Corporate Development team members and other key specialist stakeholders across South32 to understand the business drivers and drivers of demand for innovation in copper
- Maintain a strong understanding of the technology programs under their leadership impacting key project stakeholders and maintain a position on key considerations for resulting processing technologies
- Innovation & Technology (Copper & Battery Feedstock)
- Responsible for driving processing technology innovation focused on greenfield copper projects (or other battery-related metals) and mineral exploration
- Support best practices and process implementation that enable people to contribute innovative ideas from across the organization
- Ensure data gathered from idea generating activities is captured and analysed in conjunction with research, market analysis and business planning
Technology Development
- Work closely with technology partners and external research institutes to develop emerging processing and exploration technologies that can materially improve the outcomes of new Copper projects (or other battery-related metal projects)
- Drive the application of processing technology to accelerate project development and improve project outcomes
- Identify and build strategic relationships with key vendors and suppliers that bolster and support our internal capabilities in the identification and development of novel technologies applied to greenfield projects and exploration
About You
You will be required to have the following.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in in copper (and one other battery material) processing with strong experience in hydrometallurgy.
- Demonstrated Experience in innovation and improvement roles, as well as in: (i) the development or application of advanced processing technologies in business and (II) Operational related roles in the fields of production, maintenance or engineering.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Metallurgical or Chemical). Post-graduate qualifications (MBA, M.Eng, PhD) desirable but not a necessity.

Location
This role will report into our corporate office in the heart of Perth CBD, with flexibility to be be based out of our Chile, Perth, or Tucson offices
