About the Role

The Opportunity – Permanent, Full-Time Position

The role of Principle Decarbonisation Technology is responsible for providing strategy and direction innovative decarbonization technologies. These technology solutions are essential to deliver on our emissions reduction targets while enhancing operational excellence. Specifically, the role has four core focus areas outlined below.:

Design of Energy Supply and Use Technology for our Future Portfolio:

  • Responsible for leveraging nascent clean energy technology and digital technologies (such as AI, data analytics, and automation), to achieve energy system optimisation; this role will also be responsible for developing methodology and processes to establish priorities in the area of decarbonisation and execute various initiatives in the pursuit of delivering the vision of a “Next Generation Mine” 

Enable Current Operations and Future Portfolio in South32 to deliver new levels of sustainability, performance, and profitability: 

  • Involvement with a wide range of technology solutions to address the challenges of South32’s unique and diversified asset portfolio; this will include large-scale renewable energy systems, energy storage, processing electrification, mobile fleet electrification, clean fuels, and carbon capture and storage

Support Energy Strategy Execution:

  • Provide decarbonisation technology direction of Energy programs of work, including capital projects and energy supply agreements

Clean Energy Technology Champion and Thought Leadership: 

  • Responsible for driving cultural change around the enabling power of clean energy technology to help South32 achieve its strategic decarbonisation goals

Reporting to the Practice Lead Decarbonisation Technology, you will be responsible for:

  • Contribute to and champion the Technology Development vision, plan, and strategy, with a focus on influencing the business towards the adoption of clean energy technology in our Future Portfolio and current operations, considering the short, medium, and long-term horizons
  • Together with the broader Technology Development team members, support the development of project and delivery practices that enable piloting and prototyping at current South 32 operations in the context of application at Future portfolio
  • Promote open innovation and introduce project tools and processes that encourage creative thinking, such as idea generation platforms, jam sessions, hackathons, and internal and external crowdsourcing for the benefit of South32
  • Work closely with technology partners and external research institutes to develop emerging energy technologies that can materially improve the outcomes of new projects

About You

We’d love to hear from people who have demonstrated experience in energy or heavy industry operations or services, who also have:

  • A strong foundation in Thermodynamic principals
  • Personal qualities as an enthusiastic self-starter, highly motivated, and collaborative person with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and engage a multi-function team, manage change, and operate in an environment that promotes excellence
  • Ability to lead and inspire the core delivery team to ensure the technical, operational, and strategic needs are met.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and proven ability to build positive relationships internally and externally and leverage them to influence change.
  • Experience in vendor management and establishing strong vendor relationships

Qualifications

  • Tertiary Degree in energy or engineering (chemical or processing preferred)
  • Graduate Diploma or higher degree in a relevant field will also be highly regarded
