About GEMCO 

Located on the tropical Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory, GEMCO is a South32 Company, the operation is accountable for over 20% of the world’s manganese ore production. Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963.

About the role

This is a permanent full-time role being offered on a 4:3 roster, FIFO Darwin or Cairns or can be offered as residential subject to housing availability.

Reporting to the Manager External Affairs, some of your responsibilities will include:

• Maintain the day-to-day relationship with Anindilyakwa Land Council mining and sustainability personnel
• Work across the GEMCO Operations and Leadership to ensure we deliver on our commitments to the ALC and the Traditional Owners of Groote Eylandt
• Deliver social related research to prepare GEMCO for closure
• Facilitate and coordinate activities relating to the Closure Steering Committee which may include progressing independent technical studies with third parties relating to economic development projects
• Identify and develop community initiatives and projects
• Support develop and execute GEMCO’s Social Performance Plan, Stakeholder Engagement Plan and Communications Plan.
• Proactively engage with the closure and operational teams to ensure alignment around closure related community activities.

About you

• Tertiary qualification in Environment, Engineering, Communications, or another External Affairs related discipline, or extensive work experience in a directly related environment
• Significant experience in a similar role ideally within Mining or Heavy Industry
• Experience with complex Stakeholder Engagement is essential
• Accomplished and persuasive written and verbal communication skills including the ability to simplify complex, technical information into straightforward messaging suitable for a range of audiences
• Ability to manage complex stakeholder engagement to tight deadlines
• Experience working in regional or remote Indigenous communities is preferred
