About the Role
Reporting to the Area Lead Engineering, we are seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to work for BHP's Copper and Coal Asset Projects (CCAP) Group in the Technical team. To be successful in this role you will be an effective technical leader and a collaborative communicator with the ability to manage multiple business priorities simultaneously.
Typical projects include:
- High voltage substations and associated electrical installations for port and mine infrastructure, e.g. mine industrial areas, materials handling and processing, slurry and water pumping, and underground mine ventilation systems.
- Overhead power lines.
- Materials handling or processing plant upgrades or expansions.
- Mine developments and expansions.
Location - Brisbane based with occasional travel to Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley sites.
The role description includes:
- Provide subject matter expertise, oversight and technical review of electrical engineering activities.
- Provide input to project engineering strategy and scope to support study and business outcomes.
- Influence basis of design and engineering outcomes to prioritise the minimum technical solution.
- Challenge engineering processes and standards to identify opportunities for improve project value and safety.
- Proactively identify engineering risks and contribute to risk management processes.
- Foster collaborative relationships with Engineering Service Providers, site stakeholders, and electrical equipment manufacturers.
- Review engineering designs to:
- Identify opportunities to improve project value including cost, NPV, and safety.
- Ensure compliance with agreed project and phase requirements.
- Ensure compliance to company and legislative requirements.
- Contribute to selection of Engineering Service Providers including bidder selection and tender evaluation.
- Maintain knowledge of internal and external electrical engineering standards, applicable local legalisation and requirements
- Improve the Engineering team's awareness of electrical engineering best practice and innovation opportunities.
- Participate in engineering design and safety review workshops (e.g. HAZOPs, HAZIDs).
About You
Qualification and Experience:
- Bachelor of Engineering – Electrical
- RPEQ - Electrical (or eligible)
- Minimum 15 years’ experience
- Extensive electrical engineering design experience with mine infrastructure projects including engineering support during construction and commissioning.
- Experience with Queensland and NSW Coal Mining Safety and Electrical Safety Legislation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
- Experience with the following is desirable:
- High voltage installations including overhead power lines, substations, transformers, cables and switchgear.
- Mine industrial electrical installations including high voltage and low voltage motor control including variable speed drives, instrumentation and control systems.
- Implementing Arc Flash mitigation strategies for new electrical installations.
- Interpretating power system study outputs from Engineering Service Providers.
- Brown field electrical modifications to industrial installations (i.e. evaluating the capacity of existing infrastructure to support upgrades or expansions).
- The following would be advantageous:
- Previous operations and maintenance experience on a mine site or port facility.
- Functional safety competency.
- Hazardous areas classification and electrical design competency.
