About the role
We are seeking a Principal Engineer to join our Engineering & Asset Management team, supporting our Cape Lambert and Dampier Port Operations.
As a key member of this newly formed team, you will serve as the ultimate authority and technical subject matter expert (SME) for all port-specific Engineering and Asset Management matters with specific focus on Fixed Plant, Marine and Car Dumper assets. This role offers the flexibility to be based on either a FIFO or residential basis.
Within this role, you will report to Supply Chain Services – Asset Management Ports Manager, and be responsible for the following:
Promote safety awareness and safe work practices and compliance with Rio Tinto’s safety awareness systems and legislation.
Operating as technical authority for discipline specific engineering standards and approving proposed changes against these standards.
Provide framework and guidelines for whole of life asset maintenance strategy and tactics, technical oversight and consistency of these plans.
Developing processes for structured compliance auditing against the suite of engineering standards.
Manage a small team of professionals
Bring a consistent approach to the structural integrity inspection and defect remediation approaches across Dampier and Cape.
Consolidate long-term multi year end of life and structural integrity programs of work.
To succeed in the role, you will have:
Exceptional interpersonal skills with an ability to engage, negotiate with and influence stakeholders.
Significant experience in ports or equivalent engineering leadership function – recognised expert.
Significant experience in leading organisational business improvement initiatives.
Qualifications:
Relevant Structural Engineering Degree with minimum 8 years’ experience
A current Western Australian “C” Class Drivers licence (manual)

Where you will be working
Our four independent shipping terminals at two locations, Cape Lambert and Dampier, are managed as a single port system. Each terminal has facilities for train unloading, product stockpiling and blending, and ship loading. Employees reside in Wickham which is located 1,572 km north of Perth and 13 km north of Roebourne in the Pilbara region of Western Australia with Karratha being the closest town. Wickham is a fascinating historic town boasting pristine sandy beaches and excellent fishing spots.
