Principal Geologist - Iron Ore Exploration

Work Location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday – Friday (with regular travel to Exploration sites across WA between the March - October period)

Fortescue's Exploration Department are looking for a Principal Geologist to plan and execute target generation, geological mapping and exploration activities across the company's Western Australian tenement portfolio. This role is critical to the safe, productive and timely delivery of future mineral resources required to support continued growth of the iron ore business.

Based in Perth with regular site travel, this is a hands-on position responsible for identifying new and exploring our existing projects. As a key team member, you will play a lead role in managing internal teams to achieve the company's goals in identifying and evaluating new deposits and increasing current knowledge of our known deposits.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Generate and deliver high quality targets across company’s landholding in Western Australia; with a focus on both greenfield and brownfields exploration
  • Design, implement and lead work programs, in particular; reconnaissance and detailed geological mapping campaigns
  • Application of regional and local scale data reviews demonstrating meaningful analysis for geology, geochemistry, structure, mineralisation controls and targeting
  • Review, capture and interpretation of historical, open file and ASX data; assisting in maintaining databases and involvement in competitor review process
  • Assist with the transfer of project specific knowledge with colleagues, demonstrate strong leadership and help develop and mentor fellow and junior geologists
  • Ensure that exploration work practices and systems are in line with the Safety Management Plan and relevant statutory requirements

Qualification and Experience: 

  • Bachelor of Science (Geology) or equivalent
  • 10+ years industry relevant experience 
  • Strong knowledge of WA Geology, in particular Hamersley basin stratigraphy, including an understanding of supergene / hypogene fluids, structural setting of deposits and their function in iron ore alteration systems
  • Solid knowledge of structural geology and previous geological mapping experience
  • Knowledge of WA Legislation (Mining Act, Mines Safety, Environmental Protection and Heritage Act and Regulations)
  • Proficient in the use of industry standard software (e.g., ArcGIS, Leapfrog3D & acquire)
