The Opportunity - Permanent, Full Time Position
As the Principal - Greenfields Technology & Innovation, you are in the forefront of selecting and evaluating new and emerging technologies. You will be passionate about innovation and naturally creative, with a key focus on improving area selection, undercover exploration, and ore body characterisation and their potential application to Greenfields Exploration activities globally.
Reporting to the Manager Geoscience Research & Technology, key role responsibilities include:
• Collaborate with Greenfields Exploration management, delivering an exploration technology strategy and research portfolio that is focused on opening new exploration search spaces for discovery and to ultimately improve orebody discovery rates.
• Conducting emerging technology ‘eco-system’ scan to evaluate external trends and technologies and identify and implementing enhancements, including the next generation of geoscience tools / models and process flows that will ultimately improve orebody discovery rates.
• Working closely with Greenfields Exploration Team and South32 Technology to support established technologies and to trial / integrate new disruptive innovations in direct detection of orebodies, and geospatial data management and analytics for targeting.
• Collaborating with South32’s innovation group (Innovate32) to aid in the ongoing success of South32’s ‘Securing Future Resources’ initiative, including ensuring that initiatives are being planned, budgeted, and delivered to standard
• Building and maintaining a strong external network in relevant technical fields and harnessing scientific collaboration with external research and industry groups to improve ore body detection at surface
• Informs and works collaboratively with South32 Functions to ensure project scope and planning have appropriate capacity and capability to effectively manage and safely execute work programs
• Collaborates with South32 Functions to build resilient relationships with our business partners, communities, and government to ensure South32 has a social and legal license to operate in a jurisdiction
• Works, in collaboration with Supply and Legal, to develop and maintain relationships with contractors and suppliers and ensures alignment of the contractual obligations, terms and scope.
About You
• Advanced knowledge of deep under cover mineral exploration technologies and exploration targeting workflows, including advanced analytics and machine learning techniques.
• A strong background in base metals, particularly porphyry / skarn, carbonate replacement, SEDEX and VMS systems.
• Sound understanding of the geological processes driving mineralised systems and the formation of mineral deposits, discovery exploration value drivers and strategies across a range of commodities.
• Prior experience working with or advising exploration and / or technology teams and managing/ participating in research projects and industry consortiums is preferred.
• Varied experience in exploration or consulting to mining/exploration companies across a wide range of commodities
• Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with a natural abundance of energy, warmth and genuine enthusiasm
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, with the capability and desire to deliver “hands on” support with your team as and when necessary
• Advanced communication skills, including the ability to present results to technical and non-technical audiences
• Sound experience co-developing, piloting and deploying exploration technology solutions to expedite successful discovery outcomes
• Proven ability to work independently and unsupervised
• Highly self-motivated, results oriented, and delivery focused with a willingness and passion to drive improvement and innovation
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s (Hons) degree in Geoscience or equivalent, with preference for MSc or PhD level
