About the role
All progress begins with pioneers. At Rio Tinto, it begins with you.
We are looking for a Principal Heavy Mobile Equipment Engineering to deliver world-class Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) asset management and engineering support across our integrated portfolio of iron ore assets.
This role is a great opportunity to develop your technical leadership skills where your talents will be exposed to the wider Maintenance Planning and Engineering team, and Iron Ore business.
We are an open and connected team, that offers competitive, performance-focused remuneration and a wide range of benefits to reward your contribution. With a global reach, the opportunities to develop and grow your career are broad and exciting.
Reporting to the Manager HME Engineering, this is a great opportunity for a technical leader with great communication skills to lead a technical team. You will be joining an experienced and knowledgeable group of HME subject matter experts whose expertise spans across HME engineering, reliability, asset specifications, fleet planning and strategy within our Iron Ore, Maintenance Planning and Engineering department.
In this role, you will be:
- Leading our centralized HME Fleet Engineering program, focused on safety, cost and performance improvement initiatives across our HME assets;
- Partnering with our HME original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to collaboratively develop engineering solutions for immediate problems (or short-term fixes) as well as long-term strategic improvements;
- Regularly engaging with each of the iron ore sites, predominantly maintenance and reliability engineers and maintenance leaders, to assist in problem-solving and troubleshooting HME-related performance issues from an engineering perspective;
- Maintaining visibility of site-based HME initiatives, to ensure alignment with centralized engineering improvement work;
- Supporting key ad-hoc and strategic safety improvement goals, through incident investigation capability for HME-related events, projects focused on risk reduction and Elimination of Live Work, and best-practice replication;
- Coaching and mentoring team members, partners and stakeholders on best-practice HME asset management principles and processes;
- Working with our procurement function to engage our OEMs and suppliers with relation to manufacturer-related concerns and opportunities.
What you’ll bring
It is crucial for success in this role that you bring a deep curiosity to your work, one that drives you to challenge the status-quo and present solutions that will help us to work smarter each and every day. This coupled with the courage to take risks, learning as much from your mistakes as the successes, will see you champion the normalisation of failure as a pathway to ultimate success coupled with a demonstrated commitment to safety, wellness, environment heritage and community.
You will be an experienced practician across maintenance, reliability, or asset management with a well-developed understanding of reliability-centered maintenance, change management and best practice asset management principles. Previous experience working with a Heavy Mobile Equipment portfolio base, or the demonstrated ability to transfer your technical understanding of asset management principles into new areas will see you thrive in this role.
It is important to have well-developed engagement skills, allowing you to effectively communicate and influence across a multi-layered and diverse stakeholder base whilst leading a small technical team to success, through effective goal setting, coaching and support.
