Principal Heritage

Work Location: Fortescue Centre. Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

Summary:

Based in Perth, the Principal Heritage is accountable for end-to-end delivery of FFI Australia and NZ projects, as well as Fortescue’s non-iron exploration activities. In close collaboration with the Heritage Manager – Project Development, the Heritage Principal is responsible for providing strategic direction to the business and heritage team, in relation to the management and safe delivery of Fortescue’s cultural heritage and social surroundings requirements. The Principal Heritage provides technical and quality assurance to a team of Advisors, as well as support to a remote field team.

Pivotal to this role is to maintain holistic relationships with internal stakeholders (FFI Project teams, Acquisition and Tenements, Environmental Approvals, GIS, Exploration GenEx) and external stakeholders (Native Title Prescribed Bodies Corporate, Members of Native Title Groups, Archaeology and Anthropology Consultants, DPLH).

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement a Cultural Heritage Approvals Strategy that anticipates and responds to shifting regulatory and societal expectations in relation to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage
  • Ensure approvals are sought in accordance with obligations set by Fortescue’s Agreements, and are compliant with relevant State and Commonwealth Aboriginal Cultural Heritage legislation
  • Lead the development and implementation of social surrounds engagement strategies, to meet business requirements and regulator expectations
  • Develop and maintain an Obligations Register, that is transparent within the business
  • Show strong leadership to a growing team of Advisors and field team members, to ensure work quality, schedule and Values expectations are met
  • Escalation of delays or issues that arise as appropriate

Education and Experience

  • At least 10 years experience working in cultural heritage within mining or energy sectors. Previous experience as a team lead or in an influencing-without-authority role, as well as experience in developing cultural heritage management plans, would be viewed highly
  • Knowledge of WA and Commonwealth legislation in relation to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management
  • Bachelor degree in Archaeology or Anthropology or in a related field with post-graduate qualifications or equivalent experience
  • Technical Heritage assessments, setting processes and standards, mentoring, work coordination, stakeholder engagement, GIS
