About the Role

This Principal role forms part of the Australia and Asia Investigations team, conducting investigations into Category A matters in line with BHP internal investigation requirements. With strong technical investigations knowledge, the Principal is required to prepare investigation plans and strategies including determining process, parameters and investigation outputs. Working in a multidisciplinary team, the role will provide guidance, advice and support to colleagues within the investigative team to assist them in effectively conducting investigations.

Other key accountabilities are as follows:

  • Effectively and efficiently plans and delivers investigations.
  • Prepares for and conducts interviews with both internal and external investigation participants to gather evidence, determine further actions, and ensure procedural fairness and compliance with procedures and legislation.
  • Exercises judgment and applies technical knowledge to make findings whether allegations of serious misconduct are substantiated.
  • Analyses and identifies organisational factors related to investigation outcomes;  
  • Proactively engages with relevant investigation participants and stakeholders  on a regular basis, anticipating and responding to the needs of different stakeholders and provides adequate progress updates while ensuring the protection of sensitive information
  • Prepares investigation reports and closure memos outlining the investigative activities undertaken and findings made.
  • Continuously exercises mature judgement, tenacity and manages concurrent investigations while focused on personal wellbeing and organisational risk.
  • Drives continuous enhancement of the Investigations Framework by proactively identifying and sharing technical, cultural and substantive learnings. 
  • Creates a culture of trust and collaboration with BHP Assets and Functions to foster a learning environment and identify and implement improvement opportunities for future investigations.

About You

As the successful candidate you will have demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining strategic stakeholder relationships, including collaboration between key decision makers. You enjoy supporting team performance and capability development through peer support, collaboration, sharing of lessons learned and providing on-time feedback.

Formal requirements of the role are:

  • Degree qualified in Law, Investigations or related field (or extensive relevant equivalent experience)
  • Formal recognised investigation, evidence gathering and interviewing training
  • Minimum of 5 years experience conducting criminal, regulatory, corporate or government workplace investigations

In addition, we are seeking specific attributes such as:

  • Demonstrated analytical, organisational, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Extensive and broad experience in the conduct of serious and complex investigations.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple investigations simultaneously.
  • Experience operating in a large corporate or multinational environment, preferably the Resources sector.
