Principal Market Intelligence Analyst

The Principal Market Intelligence Analyst is responsible for the preparation of quantitative and qualitative research and analysis to support FFI’s clean energy build-out in North America, with a principal focus on the production and sale of green hydrogen. This role is responsible for initiating and developing partnerships with internal FFI clients—such as project developers, commercial-facing units negotiating offtake, or government affairs team—to understand their objectives, workflow, and support needs. This role will exercise leadership and self-initiate work product supportive of internal clients’ strategic objectives and be responsive to requests for support. This role will also maintain awareness of relevant FFI capabilities globally—such as to estimate the economic impact or carbon intensity of projects—and leverage those capabilities in support of activities in North America. The Principal Market Intelligence Analyst will also lead ad hoc project teams comprised of participants across different FFI business units to execute quick-turnaround strategic deliverables (“sprints”) as directed by senior leadership.

This multi-disciplinary role requires a broad familiarity with the North American energy sector, to include both legacy hydrocarbon markets and systems, and emerging clean energy technologies. This role also requires familiarity with the public policy backdrop for accelerating the clean energy transition. An ability to conduct project economic modelling and other quantitative forecast methods is desirable. This role will work closely with other members of the Market Intelligence team to conduct a wide range of analysis to support project development and strategic planning efforts.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Researching industry trends, to include: existing and emerging end uses for green hydrogen and green ammonia, alternative energy solutions competing with green hydrogen, electrolyzer technology development and relevant supply chains, renewable power generation and regional power markets, and transportation logistics.
  • Serving as the identified support lead for specific regions and projects, partnering with developers to evaluate all non-engineering aspects of projects and to support preparation of materials required to facilitate an investment decision.
  • Conducting quantitative (basic modelling) and qualitative analysis, such as on project economics, to support long-term strategic planning, specific project planning, and other business investment decisions.   
  • Evaluating transportation logistics (pipeline, rail, truck, maritime) to including pricing, infrastructure constraints, regulatory requirements, and capacity availability.
  • Assessing the availability of renewable energy by region, developing strategies for firming power supply, and identifying lowest cost sources.
  • Synthesizing the hydrogen and ammonia strategies of firms in adjacent industries, such as industrial gas companies and fertilizer manufacturers.
  • Identifying and initiating early outreach to strategic partners to support FFI’s market entry or expansion based on complementary interests and capabilities.
  • Partnering with legal team to establish non-disclosure agreements with potential partners (suppliers, logistics, offtakers) to support relationship development and evaluation of capabilities and needs.
  • Understanding critical supply chain risks based on the availability, price, and lead time of key components such as electrolyzers and transformers.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve financial outcomes through detailed physical market and commodity market analysis.
  • Training and mentoring entry-level analysts. Identifying and sharing new tools and methods with others on the Market Intelligence team.

Experience

Education

  • Demonstrated track record of leveraging energy industry databases or high frequency financial data (such as Bloomberg Terminal or CapitalIQ) to conduct bespoke analysis.
  • Project leadership experience, including in client-facing (internal or external) roles.
  • Experience working for, or with, U.S. oil and gas companies, industrial gas companies, U.S. utilities, power developers, emerging energy technology providers, or equipment manufacturers will be considered favorably.
  • Experience with other energy or commodity markets will be considered favorably.
  • Mathematics, commerce, financial markets, economics, engineering, science, or other analytical degree.
