About the Role

Joining BHP’s External Affairs team in this key position of Principal Media Relations (Queensland and New South Wales), you will be responsible for enhancing and protecting BHP’s reputation through effective media engagement within Queensland and New South Wales (NSW), and across Australia.

For a contract period of 12-months, the role reports to the Manager Media Australia, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Supporting the delivery of the Company’s global media relations strategy through proactive and reactive media engagement across print, broadcast and online in Queensland and NSW.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with national, state and regional journalists based in Queensland and NSW, in support of BHP’s business objectives.
  • Promoting an understanding of BHP’s objectives and activities with and through the media, in a manner consistent with operational, functional and global media strategies. Act as Company spokesperson as required.
  • Providing strategic advice to the business on issues and opportunities to protect and enhance the Company’s reputation in its operating regions and with key stakeholders such as industry, government and investors.
  • Advising BHP’s senior Queensland and NSW-based leaders on media strategy and supporting strategic engagements including interviews, speeches and events.
  • Providing strategic direction to BHP’s digital activity in Queensland and NSW as it relates to media objectives, to help promote the Company’s activities and manage issues proactively and reactively.
  • Collaborating with a range of internal teams in operations and corporate functions to manage the preparation and release of statements and supporting materials in a manner consistent with listed company, legal and reputational requirements.
  • Engaging with leaders and teams across the global and national external affairs function to deliver aligned outcomes across BHP’s footprint and, where required, deliver national and global projects.
  • Leading issues and crisis management communications, as required.

About You

As an experienced and highly motivated professional, you will have a background in corporate, political or media communications, with a track record of developing and executing strategically aligned media and digital activities. High level communication and writing skills are a must.

Your networks within Queensland, NSW and Australian resources, business and/or political media will be well developed, and you will have good knowledge of Australian print, broadcast and electronic media, and wire services.

By nature you are at ease in dealing with an array of stakeholders, and your relationship and communication skills will be key strengths. Under pressure, you stay calm while juggling multiple tasks and deadlines and can draw on your problem solving skills as issues arise. A relevant tertiary qualification is preferred.
