Principal Mining Engineer - Belinga
Work Location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

An exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated Principal Mining Engineer to join our Studies team as the Perth based mining lead for the Belinga Project, reporting to the Study Manager.
The Belinga Project is located in the Republic of Gabon, West Africa, and is potentially one of the world’s largest undeveloped, high-grade hematite deposits. Ivindo Iron, the Joint Venture between Fortescue Metals Group and the Africa Transformation and Industrialization Fund (ATIF), will evaluate the Belinga Project.
This role is responsible for coordinating the phased mining studies, over a three year evaluation period - providing guidance on the mining strategy and innovative options, guidance on technical mine planning, and leading a team of several mining engineers.
To be successful in this role candidates must have strong interpersonal skills with good understanding of both operational and planning functions within the mining industry, including the technical and support functions that support these areas. The candidate will possess strong relationship and communication skills with strong operational background to be able to articulate the conceptual mining activities to the relevant stakeholders.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Building relationships with key external and internal stakeholders
- Planning, execution and delivery of planned studies activities; identifying key operational activities within the study and provide commercial solutions to deliver these activities
- Finding and assessing innovative solutions that add value, from an economic, social and environmental point of view, within the mining and infrastructure areas
- Liaise with technical support functions to understand risk and opportunities to the proposed operations and to enable timely achievement of study milestones
- Site travel as required to progress the study
- Competent Person Ore Reserve sign-off (JORC Code) is anticipated
Qualifications and skills required:
- Relevant Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mining or similar)
- French speaking advantageous
- West African experience advantageous
- Very strong interpersonal skills with both internal and external groups
- Practical and solutions focused approach to engineering and design problems
- Strong project management experience
- Demonstrated open pit mining experience
