About the role
We are looking for a Principal Mining Engineer / Manager Studies to plan and execute LoM Mine Design Study work programs to support the Life of Mine Studies at Oyu Tolgoi. The role is an exciting opportunity to match your Mine Planning, Project Management and Leadership skills with global and diverse team of stakeholders.
This role is a great opportunity to take the next step in your career whilst working on a truly global project. Working residential in Brisbane with travel to the mine site on Mongolia as required. Reporting to the Manager – Studies, you will be accountable for:
- Being a significant contributor to studies that will shape the future of Oyu Tolgoi Project
- Leading a team of mining engineers and consultants to execute safe and practical mine designs, while supporting their development and growth
- Ensuring project design schedules are practical, consider key interactions, and are adequately resourced
- Work closely with other technical and engineering disciplines to ensure best for project decisions
- Fostering strong stakeholder relationships both internally and externally
- Contractor management using best practice project management of service providers using standard Rio Tinto work practices
- Collaborating with Oyu Tolgoi Mine Planning and Design Teams contribute to development of effective mine design and life of mine (LOM) schedules
- Ensuring compliance to the relevant discipline Rio Tinto Safety Standards
- Seeking opportunities to improve safety and implement efficiency improvements
What you’ll bring
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- Bachelor’s Degree in mining engineering with extensive technical experience in underground mining
- Experience in Mine Operations and/or Projects, Mine Technical Services and/or Studies
- Experience with underground mine development processes, specifically cave development and construction
- Experience requisite to be a Competent Person or Competent Person in Training under JORC.
- Competency in Risk Management and Risk Assessment
- Demonstrated communication skills, including an ability to build relationships with both internal stakeholders and external consultancies
- You must possess a high understanding of project management, project development and engineering work methodology.
- Excellent writing skills, attention to detail and an ability to problem solve
- Demonstrated commercial insight, strategic thinking and business acumen
- Excellent interpersonal, team building and collaborative skills
- Inclusive, honest, kind, and respectful interactions with your stakeholders and team
- Problem solving and forward-thinking mindset
- Exceptional communication skills giving clear recommendations and communications aimed at the right level
- Works very well in a team that has diverse experience, technical expertise and opinion to draw out the best for project solutions
- Willingness to involve the collective expertise in the business and balance the technically optimal with the operationally viable through constant and open discussion with technical and operational subject matter experts and leaders
It would also be beneficial if you have:
- Experience in delivery of mine studies and design
- Experience in underground mining construction
- Sound knowledge of mine ventilation systems
- Understanding of cave production planning systems and mine design software packages
- Membership of professional mining societies such as Engineers Australia, AusIMM
- Chartered Professional recognition (or eligibility) CP, RPEQ etc

Where you’ll be working
The Rio Tinto Copper group is a global organisation with operations and projects in the U.S. (Kennecott Utah Copper, "RTKC", and Resolution Copper Project), Mongolia (Oyu Tolgoi), Simandou (Guinea) and Western Australia (Winu Cu-Au project). The portfolio also includes interests in a non-managed joint venture in Chile, in addition to exploration & evaluation interests and other minor investments.
This role is based in Brisbane. We offer a flexible working arrangement with a balance of office-based and work from home. You will have the opportunity to travel on a periodic basis to Mongolia to visit the Oyu Tolgoi site.
