About the Rail Academy

The Rail team are thinking big for the future of Heavy Haul Rail in WA and have established the Rail Academy. Our Rail Academy team are committed to creating training pathways and employment opportunities in rail for Australian regional communities.

Through BHP’s Rail Academy we are currently delivering a nationally recognised curriculum and training pathway for heavy haul train driving. Our facility has been established in Port Hedland, Western Australia and has been strategically built to bring the classroom, virtual reality simulation training and in-field rail training closer together.

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for you to bring your Learning and Development expertise and create meaningful change at BHP.

The Principal Planning and Learning Pathways exists within our Rail Academy where you will be a key member of our innovative and capable team. You will identify capability needs across rail and design and deploy learning programs to provide value and lead positive change in the way we work.  You will utilise your technical expertise in adult learning to develop sustainable and scalable training plans and scheduling solutions to encourage a continuous learning culture and great experience for our trainees.  

This role is based in Pt Hedland and can be offered on a FIFO (5/2, 4/3) or Residential (5/2) basis with flexibility.

Key responsibilities will include;

  • Partner with key stakeholders to understand their capability requirements
  • Provide informed recommendations on sustainable, best-fit training solutions that address the root cause of capability gaps
  • Develop programs and supporting toolsets for development of growth for future pathways and pipelines in the Rail Academy
  • Prepare, develop, and optimise the integrated master plan and integrated master schedule to meet learning objectives
  • Validate and implement corrective measures to improve the planning and scheduling of the learning programs
  • Review, critically analyse and challenge the training execution to ensure outcomes are optimal and consistent with key functional and organisational objectives
  • Build knowledge of what works best for specific learner groups and topics and incorporate learnings into future initiatives

About You

To be successful in this role you will be an experienced and skilled professional with outstanding communication and stakeholder engagement skills and a genuine passion for learning and development.

You will be a self-motivated individual that enjoys being hands on, happy to dive into the detail and have a proven track record of delivering creative, customer focused solutions. You will bring energy and a strong team player attitude with the ability to collaborate across teams.

You will be a strong advocate for change and be motivated by success and inspiring others through your relationship building and influencing skills.

In addition, we are looking for the following;

  • Qualifications and experience in training and development in a similar level role
  • Project management experience, including proactive, continuous improvement focus that identifies opportunities and efficiencies
  • Willingness to lead and implement change, as well as influence, coach and model BHP values and behaviours
  • Strong problem solving, influencing and negotiating skills with the ability to build credibility and trust
  • A genuine passion and drive to create a more inclusive workplace which is free from harassment, discrimination and victimization
