About the role

We are looking for a Principal Production Systems - Operational Excellence to join our dynamic Operational Excellence team within the Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) division. Our Safe Production System teams play a critical role in empowering our frontline employees, so we can be the best operator we can possibly be. We do this by bringing together industry best practice, which helps us to design a framework and set of tools to support our employees and create a resilient and stable operation throughout the commodity cycle.

Reporting to the Manager, Safe Production Systems you will:

  • Support the Safe Production Systems diagnostic on site and support the site in the definition of the priorities
  • Deliver the Rio Tinto Production System (RTPS) at Iron Ore level
  • Integrate with central program under the Office of the Chief Operating Officer
  • Help to identify and build the team that will support the transformation
  • Work closely with functional leaders to support initiatives through implementation, including tracking progress against milestones and leading change management activities
  • Ensures consistent SPS standards implementation and identify opportunities for SPS standards improvement
  • Provide coaching to leaders and change leaders (Operation leaders, stream leaders and Kaizen facilitators)
  • Set up SPS at sites focusing on empowerment, engagement, behaviours and mindsets in a bottom up way
  • Work collaboratively to design and construct SPS principals, methods and measures of success
  • Lift themes from the deployments (e.g. Mirror walks / gallery walks) to areas we can focus on and address at a systematic level across Iron Ore
  • Guide deployment teams on best practice for RTSPS deployments
  • Oversee the development and deployment of the RTIO guidance notes to ensure consistent deployment of RTSPS practices in Iron Ore, with a focus on Operational Excellence practices
  • View RTSPS through an operational lens to enhance deployment success; and position how RTIO takes a “ground up” approach to RTSPS practices

What you’ll bring  

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Proven experience in successfully leading and delivering projects in matrix-based positions
  • Lean experience as Lean change agent
  • An ability to identify and effectively navigate obstacles or roadblocks
  • Demonstrated curiosity and drive for thinking differently
  • Current C Class driver’s license

It would be beneficial but not essential to possess any of the following skills;

  • Operational Leadership
  • Lean management practices
  • Production, Management or Operating Systems as applied to business or operation management
  • Major change management
  • Systems engineering, functional systems-based modelling or activity
  • Mining (or major industrial) experience across the lifecycle from project development into operation

Where you’ll be working

Working Monday to Friday with flexible working arrangements available you will be based at the Central Park building, located in Perth CBD with regular travel to the iron ore operations in the Pilbara.
