As one of the world’s largest industrial users of energy, Rio Tinto has a unique challenge in the energy transition. The Renewable Energy Western Australia (REWA) team is part of the Rio Tinto Energy & Climate (RTEC) group led by the Chief Decarbonisation Officer. The team leads the renewable energy program within Western Australia by working collaboratively across the business to deliver on our climate commitments while ensuring our business is well positioned for the future low-carbon economy.

Rio Tinto’s iron ore operations include an electrical network of 1,000km of transmission lines, multiple 220kV substations, gas turbine generators, solar generation and battery storage feeding mines across the Pilbara region.

We are looking for a collaborative and talented Principal Program Management to drive strategic initiatives across the REWA portfolio and ensure the program aligns with RTEC and Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) strategic priorities. The program includes the identification, study and integration of a portfolio of projects for wind and solar generation, energy storage systems, substations and transmission infrastructure.

Reporting to the Chief Advisor Renewable Energy WA working as part of a dynamic and exciting team, you will be:

  • Working with REWA leaders and RTIO stakeholders to ensure the REWA program supports delivery of Rio Tinto’s strategic priorities and a lasting sustainable impact.
  • Actively managing the REWA portfolio by leading program level risk management, improvement initiatives and strategic planning during business plan review processes.
  • Engaging with REWA, climate policy, legal and approvals leaders to provide analysis which informs positions on regulatory reform, community partnerships and regional development.
  • Shaping and guiding aspects of external engagement strategies and integrating stakeholder considerations into the renewable energy development pathway.

  • Clear and concise communication skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships across all levels of the business and influence multiple stakeholders.
  • You will be a curious and creative thinker who is passionate about problem solving, risk-based decision-making and delivering innovative optimised solutions.
  • Relevant experience in strategy development, community partnerships, approvals, business analysis, planning, commercial or similar disciplines.
  • Knowledge, experience and passion for renewable energy development is advantageous.
