About the Role
Reporting to the Manager Health, Safety and Security, the key purpose of the role is to provide technical expertise in the strategic management of safety related issues, provisions and initiatives across the organisation. The Principal Safety role is responsible for providing leadership, coaching and expert advice to the BMA Coal Assets and key stakeholders on all things safety. This role is based at BMA’s Broadmeadow underground mine on a Monday to Friday roster. Key responsibilities of the role include:
- Manages, improves and provides expertise and insight on safety risk management practices to improve organisational safety outcomes and performance
- Determines the underlying cause of problems and evaluates multiple solutions to ensure a planned and structured approach to solving complex problems
- Identifies, engages and manages a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
- Engaging, influencing and motivating operational teams to bring to life BMA’s safety strategy at Broadmeadow
- Identifies and assesses risks, makes risk informed decisions, uses BHP's risk management framework and builds a risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes
- Delivers BMA’s safety strategy through planning, delivery and management of strategic projects that generate value in safer outcomes for our people
- Supporting the Health, Safety and Security Manager to deliver insights to senior stakeholders through sourcing information and conducting analyses to support evidence-based decision making
- Sustain core site Safety Fundamental Programs (Field Leadership, Investigation Quality, Behavioural Safety etc.) to grow our Safety Leadership capability to enable the desired safety culture
- Coach and mentor to grow the capability of our site Safety Specialist
- Provide coaching to our site Operational leaders to ensure quality event investigation and field leadership outcomes
- Review and analysis of emerging trends at a site level and support risk owners with the development of safety focused initiatives to improve safety compliance and outcomes
- Analyse leading and lagging performance trends to develop appropriate response plans for senior leaders to improve safety outcomes and compliance
- Strives to achieve 100% safety, 100% customer value and 0% waste
About You
We have a strong focus on finding individuals with the right values, leadership and communication skills. Your interpersonal skills will foster collaborative working relationships and your ability to consolidate and analyse information will provide critical thinking and a solution-focused attitude. You will have access to technology that will enable you to work flexibly, which is key to BHP’s success in addressing the requirements of a diverse workforce. Utilising your skills & experience in similar Safety roles, you will demonstrate:
- Strong process safety experience
- 5 years’ experience in a Safety leadership role
- Tertiary qualifications in a Safety related field or VET accreditation in WHS
- Strong analytical skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organisation
- Highly organised, with demonstrable project management experience and forward planning skills
- Ability to conduct analysis using programs inclusive of Microsoft Excel and Power Bi to interpret data and trends to provide impactful and actionable insights
- Experience in an underground mining environment highly desirable
