About the Role

Reporting to the Vice President Group Safety, the purpose of this role is to provide subject matter expertise in the design, implementation and monitoring of critical fatal risk control frameworks. The role also requires strategic management of companywide safety related issues, provisions, and initiatives across the organization.  You will contribute to the development of BHP’s global safety strategic direction, and lead work to deliver strategic objectives based on performance insights from across the global portfolio of Assets. 

The role requires a deep technical expert in fatal risk management based on knowledge from industry wide fatality patterns. The role will provide critical input to the regional and global Safety Teams in developing annual improvement plans. You will develop and deploy standards, processes and initiatives through influencing key leadership teams at regional and asset level.

This is a full-time position, available to be offered in Perth or Brisbane with some travel and flexible working options being available. The opportunity requires you to provide leadership, coaching, strategic direction and expert support on BHP safety management systems and processes relating to our global portfolio.

You will be a key member in a team of dedicated safety professionals in this complex, diverse and rewarding setting.

Accountabilities

You will be required to:

  • Subject matter expert in control framework design, implementation and monitoring.
  • Support wider team in developing framework, standards and guidelines for critical fatal risks.
  • Incorporate human centric design into control design and performance standards.
  • Identify and design internal control improvement replication opportunities. 
  • Facilitate and support control framework baseline assessments.
  • Develop strategic roadmap to enable control digitization and monitoring.
  • Engage with external industry bodies to learn from and share control framework improvement.
  • Provide input into OEM Technology Roadmaps
  • Provide technical expertise on the company safety framework, including the setting of the global safety strategy, forward focused public safety targets and BHP scorecards.
  • Identify BHP-wide safety strategies to improve the safety framework and verify effectiveness in partnership with HSE leadership and Independent Audit and Assurance teams.
  • Identify and monitor safety practices and emerging trends (internal and external) and analyze these in relation to the safety framework effectiveness.
  • Provide technical advice to the Sustainability Committee of the BHP Board, Executive Leadership Team, and wider BHP leadership on strategic safety issues that may impact BHP. 
  • Manage and coordinate relationships with peer companies, key industry associations, non-government organizations and research organizations. 

About You

You will be a self-motivated professional with excellent communication and engagement skills. You will have a solid record of accomplishment of achieving results through influence, coaching and mentoring.   

To be successful in the role, you will also have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Health and Safety, Risk Management or Engineering.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to influence at multiple levels in safety.
  • Coaching and mentoring skills with a genuine desire to help people, achieve solid outcomes and support continuous improvement.
  • Previous exposure to the mining and minerals processing industries a requirement; and
  • Ability to Lead and influence change on a global scale.
