The Opportunity - Permanent, Full Time Position

The Principal Safety & Risk is a new position within the Major Projects function. This role will be integral to developing and maturing our safety performance, supporting the projects to apply practices and behaviors consistent with achieving the desired safety culture and outcomes.

You will be responsible for providing safety and project risk management subject matter expertise, assistance, and guidance to the Function, embedding the safe work systems and processes aligned with South32’s Safety Standards and our safety guarantee.

Reporting to the Manager of Health Safety, Risk & Training, key role responsibilities include:

  • Support, maintain, and deliver a safe, healthy, and inclusive workplace that adheres to South32 standards and values
  • Coordinate the implementation of business Safety Improvement Programs across the Function
  • Initiate and lead projects and initiatives to enhance our safety and risk management systems and tools
  • Lead event investigations, coach the line personnel with identifying key factors and meaningful learnings
  • Analysis of safety data and trends, identify areas for focus and improvement
  • Facilitate and support project risk assessments
  • Manage Plan and facilitate risk routines for Studies and Project Leads to review project risk
  • Develop and maintain the Health and Safety Resource SharePoint site used to manage information and communicate across the Function
  • Manage safety and risk data quality and integrity for internal and Group reporting
  • Demonstrate and deliver a high level of maturity in safety leadership

About You 

  • Minimum ten years as a Safety practitioner
  • Experienced in project risk management with projects of high value, technically diverse, and varying complexity
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite
  • Proficiency in data monitoring, analytics, risk, and assurance processes
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills with a natural abundance of energy, warmth, and genuine enthusiasm
  • Highly collaborative, builds trust and respect by always acting with high ethical standards, objectivity, transparency, due care, and professionalism
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, with the capability and desire to deliver “hands-on” support with your team as and when necessary
  • Proven ability to work independently and unsupervised
  • Highly self-motivated, results-oriented, and delivery focused with a willingness and passion to drive improvement and innovation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in health and safety with a sound technical approach developed through resource or related experience
  • Risk management qualifications (highly desirable)
