We are looking for a Principal Signals Maintenance to be part of Rio Tinto’s Rail Network Maintenance team and be accountable for the leadership, maintenance management and design & delivery of strategic initiatives across the maintenance portfolio for signalling, wayside and asset protection systems.
With people at the heart, working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, the role will ensure the signal maintenance function is positioned to enable the enhancements of our future operations in-line with the broader Rail 2040 strategy.
Based on the criticality of the signalling assets, its performance can have a significant impact on maintaining system capacity across the rail network. The role is accountable to maintain safe operational discipline across planned / breakdown activities, ensuring timely responses and quality execution standards are adhered to.

Reporting to the Manager Rail Network Maintenance and working in a collaborative community within Rail Network Maintenance team. you will be:
- Leading a high performing team of superintendents and signals trainers, critical to the success of our Rail operations
- Coach, mentor and develop reports in leadership and field interactions
- Utilising your strong collaboration skills, leveraging partnerships, you will design, refine and deliver sustainable outcomes that add value to our people and our system performance based on current and future operational context
- Design, develop and deliver sustainable pathways that meet the future capability & capacity needs of the signals maintenance function
- Build & manage costs within budget including operating & capital expenditure by providing mid & EOM forecasts
- Create and grow relationships with key OEM’s, internal and external stakeholders
- Manage contractor relationships and performance
- Execute foundations team leadership work
- Drive a reduction in Unscheduled Loss (UL) events
What you’ll bring
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- Qualifications and/or experience in related fields such as signalling or electrical engineering
- Experience in a signal’s maintenance leadership role
- Demonstrated experience with a high level of strategic thinking and planning through the development and delivery of strategic plans that have positively influenced the performance of a team
- Demonstrated experience in managing remote teams across a geographically spread asset, comprised of professional and technical personnel
- Well established communication, collaboration and influencing skills, with the ability to manage a large volume of external and internal stakeholders effectively
- An ability to work through complex problems with a solutions driven outcome
- An ability to engage & communicate with senior leaders

Where you’ll be workingWe operate 200 locomotives on more than 1,700 kilometres of track in the Pilbara, transporting ore from 16 mines to four port terminals. The average return distance of these trains is about 800 kilometres with the average journey cycle, including loading and dumping, taking approximately 40 hours.
