About the Role

BHP’s Resource Centre of Excellent (RCoE) is looking for an experienced Long Term Planner (Mining Engineer) to join the enterprise wide “Future Planning” Program as Principal Strategic Mine Planning. Reporting to the Global Practice Lead Mine Planning, the role will support our global assets and functions to achieve technical excellence, by applying deep expertise and advanced techniques in strategic mine planning. The role is responsible for enabling assets and functions to apply best practices and innovation in long term mine planning practices, standards, capability, and tools to meet future business needs. The successful candidate will work closely and collaborate with multiple disciplines including geoscience, water, geotechnical, closure, planning managers, processing and BHP’s Digital Factories teams. Further the role will gain significant exposure to and promote best practices in enterprise optimisation. Responsibilities include:

  • Work as a key member of the Future Planning Program to deliver the improvement initiatives and new ways of working.
  • Scope, lead, execute and deliver high value, global projects to improve strategic mine planning.
  • Communicate regularly with all assets and functions involving the Future Planning Program, typically Planning Managers and Superintendents.
  • Focus on understanding and supporting significant mine planning issues and initiatives, finding solutions, and where no solutions exist, driving the development of solutions, and developing those solutions to be applicable globally.
  • Promote mine planning as the vehicle that supports, collates, and drives forward all technical disciplines and asset optionality (bottom-up and fully informed mine planning).
  • Promote and enable front-end loading understanding to inform the capital allocation plan cycle (CAP) – particularly best practice enterprise optimisation.
  • Identify and communicate significant gaps between mine planning current and best practice.
  • Provide technical support for independent peer reviews (IPRs) and globally significant mine planning projects, studies, and reviews.
  • Provide second line of defence assurance activities for mine planning as part of the BHP risk management framework, support the third line as required.
  • Represent and promote BHP externally as a leader in mine planning.

About You

As a successful candidate you will possess the following:

  • Demonstrated experience in mine planning and business analysis with deep understanding and expertise in mine planning, business valuation, and strategic planning.
  • A deep understanding of the key value drivers across a range of commodities and geographies aligned with BHP’s portfolios.
  • Demonstrated deep technical knowledge of mine planning as an integrated activity with all other technical disciplines.
  • Tertiary qualification in relevant fields such as mining engineering, processing, and geoscience required.  Business qualifications desirable.
  • Diversity of mine planning experience across multiple mining methods, commodities, and jurisdictions will be highly regarded.
  • Excellent communication skills with capability to positively influence peers in assets and functions.
  • The ability to demonstrate collaborative work relationships, which focus on solutions, value-add and sharing knowledge.
  • It is not mandatory, however Chartered Professional or Fellow of AusIMM is desirable (or meets criteria to apply).
  • It is not mandatory, however Competent or Qualified Person is desirable (or meets criteria to apply).

This role has global exposure across all assets and several functions. The role provides a platform to build understanding of BHP’s global business and what role that might excite you next.

Location

In this full-time permanent position, there is flexibility for the role to be based at our corporate office in Brisbane, Adelaide or Perth and working on Monday-Friday roster while flexible work arrangement is also offered.
