About the Role

The Principal Studies supports Directional Studies team during conceptual and pre-feasibility stages, coordinating technical team and engineering deliverables requirements and monitoring team progress during the development of Nickel West Project Studies. They ensure the final design fulfils the strategy, cost and quality Study objectives.

This is a technically complex asset so you will enjoy the challenge of delving into innovative problem-solving and delivery in a fast-paced, dynamic setting.

Working in a proactive and supportive team, you will be outcomes focused, promoting business excellence using your broad range of skills in project management, problem solving, technical knowledge, stakeholder engagement and value optimisation.

This position is based in Perth offering excellent flexibility.  Occasional site travel is required.

In this role you will:

  • Lead the coordination and integration of the BHP engineering disciplines for the development of projects studies in the Nickel West program, according to BHP and Nickel West standards
  • Coordinate the delivery of engineering studies with third party Engineering consultants, according to project objectives, budget and schedule, in conjunction with area/study scope owners
  • Lead the identification and implementation of improvement initiatives, including programmatic opportunities for increased capital efficiency and productivity for the studies, following standard value optimization/trade off processes
  • Engage, coordinate and support technical engineering disciplines for the technical assurance of third-party engineering
  • Lead implementation of risk and quality management plans in the studies, to assure effective management of the program’s engineering scope of work
  • Source information, plan and conduct analyses to support evidence-based decision making
  • Liaising with and coordinating stakeholders within an integrated, multi-disciplinary project team to ensure strong relationships and project engagement and maintain focus on project objectives
  • Maximise project value by identifying options through creative thinking processes
  • Prepare study management documentation including study work plans, end of phase reports, key value drivers and investment approval requests

About You

The successful candidate will be highly driven, outcome focused and have experience working in fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environments. You will be an effective problem solver with excellent verbal / presentation and written communications skills.

You will have divergent and convergent thinking skills, an ability to identify and assess risks and recognise project dependencies and be adept at stakeholder management. Your ability to manage complexity and ambiguity will be a key strength in this role.

You will also have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline including Engineering, Geology, Mining or an aligned area
  • Proven experience supporting and delivering projects or studies in engineering, construction, heavy industry or infrastructure
  • Significant experience in a projects environment at an EPC(m) and/or Owner level
  • Demonstrated experience in the resource or energy sector, ideally with exposure to complex minerals processing or hydromet
  • Strong communication, influencing and relationship-building skills, with an aptitude for collaborating with a range of internal and external stakeholders
