About the Role
PS&D’s purpose is to set the strategy for the business, develop and grow the portfolio in line with the strategy and deliver value through best-in-class allocation of capital and innovation.
In this newly created role as the Principal Innovation you will be supporting the Head of Sustainability Innovation, Head of Innovation and Head of Ventures. This role will require you to build strong relationships and exercise influential role with a broad range of stakeholders including Innovation & Ventures team, Regional and Global Functions, Non-operated Joint Ventures and Leadership teams;
You will work with global assets and functions to accomplish various tasks associated with innovative process technologies and/or alternative processes and roadmap implementation. Facilitating a strong stakeholder engagement and management with our operating assets and functions is important. As well as a clear business-oriented approach to a step change of future BHP investment decisions while influencing a broad range of stakeholders.
This role can either be located in the BHP Brisbane or the BHP Perth Office.
In this role you will:
- Work with the mining ecosystem through a collaborative approach to develop and de-risk innovative emissions reduction technologies;
- Lead and oversees de-risking of TRL 2-7 innovative and/or disruptive emissions reduction technologies to increase the level of readiness including working with universities, vendors, research institutes, partners, assets, and stakeholders (other functions) in co-creating testing and implementation approach;
- Lead team in the development of initiatives to support the emissions focus area. This includes managing client (assets) expectations through initiatives that drive continuous and strategic improvements.
- Lead the development of the ideation process, pragmatic research associated with the opportunity and business case, and review investment alternatives (including ventures) for opportunities put forward in the proposed roadmap maximizing BHP’s value;
- Champion technical matters and thought leadership on emissions management to influence and guide the assets and functions.
- Support the development of emissions innovation roadmaps for each asset, including support for technology and assessment, through leadership, strategic partnerships and relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide expert technical, advice and guidance to assets and new projects on the changing landscape of Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions and identifying measures for continuous improvements and/or resilience.
- Prioritise and proactively delivering results to clients (assets) and contribution to the wider business objectives in a fast-moving environment.
- Identify best practice technologies, tools and scanning of all types of process technologies with emphasis on having a 'balance initiative’ portfolio which includes emerging technologies and/or processes that have potential for disruptive innovation, and also technologies with higher TRL but not implemented in BHP yet.
About You
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Electrical Engineering, or or equivalent from an accredited university. MBA and/or Master’s degree is a plus.
- Maintaining excellence in technical industry knowledge and contribution to further industry improvement in emissions management by collaboration with external stakeholders and representing BHP in international technical forums.
- Passion combined with purpose to contribute to mining and environmental sustainability.
- Strong stakeholder management and cultural alignment (ability to work in a multidisciplinary, multicultural and diverse team) is a must.
- Foresight, pragmatic thinking and ability to think outside of the box to ensure the long-term business sustainability is a strong asset.
- Previous mining operations, Innovation, technology project management and resource sector experience in renewable energy or energy / emissions modelling is a strong asset.
- Experience and/or knowledge in renewable energy is desirable.
- Passionate communicator and thought leader combined with excellence in technical leadership to contribute to mining and environmental sustainability.
