Principal Technical Safety Engineer (Subject Matter Expert)

Work Location: Perth                                                                        

Roster: Monday to Friday

The successful candidate will provide subject matter expert (SME) advice to FFI, with direct responsibilities for Technical Safety activities within a Global Environment. The team’s mission is to “Develop technical safety standards, tools, programs, training, and work processes and help in implementing them on a global basis to comply with corporate process safety risk criteria and policies.”

Reporting to the Technical Safety Team leader, the Principal Technical Safety Engineer (SME) will advise on the use of International and local regulatory standards/policies and their implementation within engineering and operations.

During the engineering and execution phase of a project, the Principal Technical Safety Engineer (SME) will work with the project team, providing appropriate advice on deliverables, leadership, guidance to other engineering and design disciplines, and provide advice to support the commissioning and start-up of the facilities.

During the operation phase, the Principal Technical Safety Engineer (SME) will support the operating team to implement the Technical Safety Management and Risk Management Strategy and Programs.

The Principal Technical Safety Engineer (SME) will possess the skills to facilitate Hazard Reviews – HAZID/HAZOP/LOPA, Safety instrumented system analysis, Management of change, Process safety management and Pre-Start-up Safety Review.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Coordinating the development of the Health, Process and Technical, Safety Management System (i.e., PSM Framework)
  • Technical Authority / Subject Matter Expert responsibility for technical safety and related management processes (e.g., MOC, HAZOP / LOPA). The ability to facilitate these workshops will be advantageous
  • Development and managing the major accident hazard identification and risk assessment processes, where appropriate
  • Provide technical safety consulting support and recommend solutions in execution of process safety requirements to ensure compliance with appropriate standards and policies
  • Ownership and authoring technical safety standards, tools, programs, training courses, and work process
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement efforts for improved technical safety performance e.g., Management of Change, PSSR
  • SME review of consultant produced deliverables (including externally produced FFI Technical Safety Standards
  • Provide Technical Safety support to project gate assurance reviews
  • Ensuring major accident risks are controlled to ALARP and involvement in decisions over the selection of the appropriate controls - this may involve input into the selection, installation and operation of equipment and inspection/maintenance considerations
  • Provide safety leadership, counsel, and technical support to Projects

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Previous experience as a Technical Authority or Subject Matter Expert in Technical Safety (or related disciplines), in an Operator / Owner’s team is preferred.
  • Experience in Process Engineering or Plant Engineering with 10+ years (Complex Operating Facilities or Major Capital Projects) experience is preferred.
  • Minimum of 15+ years of experience in process / technical safety as a primary role, with significant experience (5+ years) on Major Capital Projects, and ideally 12+ years in an Operator’s / Owner’s team.
  • Candidates with 15+ years’ experience as a Technical Lead in an Operator’s / Owner’s team will also be considered.
  • Experience with Australian and International regulatory framework for process facilities including in Major Hazard Facilities.
